I posted last year about a redemption I made to South Africa and Thailand using AS and UA miles. It's linked in the sidebar if anybody is interested. I thought I'd share the aftermath and maybe provide some inspiration for when all of this craziness is over! I posted this in the Trips Reports thread on the churning subreddit a month or so ago, but figured I'd post here in case some of you don't visit there.
There were a couple of changes to my original flights. I ended up seeing AC availability from ZRH to YYZ and then home so i figured it was worth the change fee to not have to change airports in NYC. However, later the flight home was cancelled so I ended up being rebooked on UA metal from ZRH to EWR. Also, my HKG-CPT flight was rebooked to HKG-JNB. More about that below. Anyways, here it goes....hope you enjoy!
I returned in early March from an epic 4 week trip to Thailand and South Africa and wanted to share. This trip was full of so many firsts and I absolutely had the time of my life. I used points for most flights and paid cash for most accommodations so it was kinda a mix between points and cash.
Outbound I flew from OMA-HKG using 70k Alaska miles + $83. OMA-SEA-SFO was on Alaska metal in F. Then I had an 23 hour overnight layover in SF. I used 12k UR transferred to Hyatt to book a night at the Hyatt Regency SFO. The rooms are a bit dated, but it's a solid redemption for that price and I woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the bay
. I absolutely love SF so I was happy to be back. I started with breakfast at the Mill and then just kinda wandered around the Western Addition, to Delores, to Hayes Valley. It was nice. Then I headed back to pick up my bags and go to the Cathay Lounge at SFO. I definitely enjoyed this lounge! They have a small noodle bar and plenty of food options! Also, there is quite a bit of seating and they have those comfortable "pod" type things with a little table and plug-ins. The alcohol here is self-serve, but they had a decent selection of mid-shelf liquor and wines.
Now, here is where the real fun began! My first ever International First Class flight
and WOW! It was just incredible! I (naturally) started off with a glass of Krug to go with the warm nuts they served. I love champagne and this was as excellent as everybody says. I ended up drinking a whole bottle throughout the flight! There were 4 (of 6) passengers in the cabin and 2 flight attendants. The service was impeccable. The purser Jenny was one of the nicest people I have ever met. They just went above and beyond with little things like a handwritten note before dinner. Dinner was an excellent 5 course meal... 1. Caviar 2. Mushroom soup 3. Lobster Salad 4. Filet with potatoes and veggies 5. Sponge Cake with Raspberry and Vanilla ice cream. After dinner, I went to put on my PJs (super comfortable) and when I came back my entire bed was made. I crashed for a solid 8 hours. I never thought sleeping in the sky could be so comfortable! I had the Dim Sum for breakfast with coffee and a Cathay Delight which was also excellent! I just love those Cathay Delights (I think it's coconut milk, kiwi juice, and mint). Oh, and the amenity kit was also very nice. It's a beautiful white leather cosmetic bag filled with face moisturizer, eye cream, balancing tonic, body lotion, face mask, etc.
I arrived in HKG feeling refreshed and energized. I had about a 2 hour layover before my flight to BKK. I went to the Pier First lounge and had a shower. The shower suites were very nice with tons of amenities and great water pressure. Afterwards I grabbed a quick bite from the pre-made food selection and had a coffee. The lounge was stunning and I wish I had more time there to relax and eat the made-to-order food. Oh well, maybe next time! Then I was off to BKK. I booked PE for this flight using 6,500 MR transferred to BA + $125. The seat was open next to me so that was an added bonus!
For the first 2 nights in Bangkok I stayed at the COMO Metropolitan
. It's a beautiful hotel with outstanding service. Every single worker would put their hands together and bow every time they saw you and many of them even remembered me by name. The breakfast was excellent and they also had a wonderful spa and pool. I would highly recommend a stay at this hotel if you're looking for 5 star accommodation. I moved on after this and spent 3 nights in a private room at the Printing House Poshtel. Very nice for 2 star accommodation with a good vibe and rooftop bar! Some highlights of Bangkok included the Chatachuk Weekend Market
, the Grand Palace
, the Vertigo rooftop bar
, Lumphini Park
, the Jim Thompson House, and an incredible meal at The Family where I made a furry friend
:) I also had a massage every single day Lol
Next it was time for Ko Phi Phi
! I flew a cheap Y fare from BKK-HKT on Thai Airways and then took the ferry from Phuket. I stayed 4 nights at CoCo Beach Resort
in the cutest little bamboo huts surrounded by banana trees
. I spent a day here just chilling at my resort and on the beautiful beaches
. My other days were spent Scuba Diving
. We saw black tip reef sharks, sea turtles, and just tons of beautiful fish and reefs. This was my first time scuba diving and I actually almost quit on my first day! The divemaster convinced me to come back the next day for my 2nd pool session
and I am so glad she did because now I found a new hobby for life. This was the view from the dive shop
!! The dive shop is Blue View Divers and I can't recommend them enough! All of the staff were just wonderful, fun people.
After Ko Phi Phi, I took the ferry back to Phuket for 3 nights. I stayed at Shunli Hotel in Old Town Phuket. It's a boutique 3 star hotel, but probably the nicest place I've ever stayed for less than $50 a night. It's owned by a few Chinese women and they were some of the friendliest people I have ever met. I spent a day/evening wandering around Patong
and a day at Tree Tops Elephant Reserve
. The reserve was an amazing experience and I learned so much about these beautiful creatures and the abuse they have endured in the logging and tourism industries. Tree tops is truly ethical. No touching, no riding, no bathing. We fed them bananas at the beginning and then just watched them be elephants... It was awesome!
From Phuket I once again flew a cheap Y cash fare to Hong Kong on Thai Smile. I had about a 26 hour overnight layover in Hong Kong because I wanted to make sure I didn't miss my flight to South Africa. I spent the day going to the top of The Peak
and just wandering around Hong Kong Island. Such a beautiful city and I definitely hope to go back someday!
Hong Kong to South Africa was a continuation of my 70k Alaska redemption using their stopover perk. I was supposed to fly direct from HKG-CPT, but the flight was cancelled and I was rebooked on HKG-JNB. I had to book my own flight from JNB-CPT, but Cathay ended up refunding me the fare. I spent a few hours at the The Pier business class lounge which is beautiful! I enjoyed a few cocktails and had some more noodles. This flight was in Cathay J on a 777 since there was no first class cabin. Definitely not Cathay F, but still excellent! I really love the reverse herringbone layout and while smaller, it was still a very comfortable nights rest. Plus excellent service and of course more Cathay Delights Lol
Thailand was amazing.... but South Africa stole my heart! Easily my favorite place a I have ever traveled. I stayed 3 nights in Cape Town at Atlantic Point Backpackers. This place was awesome! Great vibes and really fun people. The hostel organizes activities in the city everyday and has games like beer pong in the bar at night. On day 1 I didn't get checked in until about 2pm because of the flight cancellation. After getting settled in I wandered around Bo Kaap and Long Street before having and excellent dinner at Pigalle. I highly recommend this place. They have live Jazz music and some of the best seafood I have ever had! On day 2 I hiked Devil's Peak
with a group from the hostel. I'm not in the greatest shape right now so it was a bit of a struggle, not going to lie! Lol But the views were breathtaking and absolutely worth it. Day 3 I went paragliding off of Signal Hill
, visited the V&A waterfront, and spent the afternoon relaxing on Camps Bay
beaches. Cape Town has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The next day I was off on a 6 day Garden Route + Addo Adventure tour. We were lucky to have an amazing group of people and tour guide
! The company is Earthstompers and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. The tour guide, Wendy, was awesome! Day 1 we drove along the scenic Clarence Drive
, visited the penguin colony at Bettie's Bay
, had lunch in Hermanus
, and went to the most southern tip of Africa
where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset
and some wine
;) Day 2 we drove to Oudtshoorn stopping at a winery
for lunch and the Cango Caves
for a tour and spelunking. Oudtshoorn is the Ostrich Captial of South Africa and so of course I tried some ostrich for the first time! It's actually really delicious and healthy! On Day 3 went canoeing and hiking in Wilderness National Park. We had a picnic lunch at a waterfall
and got in for a quick swim
! We made our way to Sedgefield
for our overnight stay where we had a wonderful Braai followed by drinks
. On day 4 some of us did the 3rd highest bungee in the world off of Bloukrans Bridge
. OMG what an adrenaline rush!! I was so scared, but so glad a mustered up the courage and did it! The vibes were legit with a dj playing house music and the entire staff dancing and smiling. I definitely think that helped! I was pumped up the rest of the day Lol Afterwards we went to Tsitsikamma National Park
which was stunning. We even saw some dolphins! We stopped here for some beautiful views
on our way to our accommodation that night. On day 5 we did a couple game drives in Addo Elephant National Park
. Such an incredible experience to see these animals in their natural habitat. Unfortunately no Lion or Rhino sightings, but we saw Elephants, Zebra, Cape Buffalo, Hyena, Kudu, Jackal, Eland, and Warthog. On Day 6 the group was cut in half as we dropped a bunch of people off in Port Elizabeth. I spent the morning sandboarding
in Mossel Bay
before we made our way back to Cape Town.
I stayed in Camps Bay for 2 more nights at a gorgeous boutique hotel called 3 on Camps Bay. I booked the executive suite
which had stunning ocean views where I enjoyed 2 beautiful sunsets
. I spent my last day exploring Kirstenbosch Gardens
and had a delicious seafood dinner at The Codfather.
Flying home I used 80k United miles to fly J. It was a LONG journey, but very enjoyable. CPT-JNB was on SAA, JNB-ZRH on Swiss, ZRH-EWR on UA, and EWR-OMA on UA. For my Swiss J flight I thought I had switched to a throne seat 2 days prior, but I must not have clicked all the way through because I was still in 6k at check-in. That was a bummer! The good thing about 6k is that the footwell is bigger than most of the other seats since it is a bulkhead. The bad part is that the aisle is right next to you. I still slept comfortably most of the flight. The meal service was slow, but good and the best part was the assortment of Swiss chocolates! I had a quick shower and breakfast at the Swiss lounge in Zurich. ZRH-EWR was on the new United Polaris (767) and I was pleasantly surprised. The purser was super friendly and went above and beyond to find me the last 2 IPAs on the plane. I didn't sleep on this flight as it was a day flight and instead just enjoyed a few movies and beer. The footwells are pretty small so I don't think it would have been the most comfortable to sleep in, but you can't really complain about a lie-flat seat! The Polaris Lounge in Newark was awesome. Not quite on the same level as the Cathay Lounges in HKG, but about as close as you can get. I had a couple (okay 4!) "on the rum" cocktails which were delicious. I was craving a burger so I ordered the Polaris Burger for dinner and thought it was great!
All in all, this trip was life changing. I'm super grateful to have had the experience and will remember these moments and all of the beautiful people I met along the way forever!
Edit: Just wanted to add a quick note that could be useful to some of you. Both UA and AS allowed me to waitlist for an upgrade. I was originally booked in Y from OMA-SEA-SFO and EWR-OMA, but was upgraded to F for all 3 legs. The AS legs cleared about a week prior. The UA leg didn't clear until right before the flight.
