Top 200 paintings in April 2020

Briefly about the methodology

Wikipedia currently has over 53 million articles in over 300 languages. Despite the impressive number of articles, not all topics can be written in this free encyclopedia. At the same time, the community of each language version has the ability to decide which topic can be described in the encyclopedia, and which is not (for example, article must be notable). In addition, each language version can describe the same topic in its own way - it all depends on the quantity and quality of the authors (Wikipedia users who edit articles).
Almost every Wikipedia article has an aligment to certain categories. Additionally, based on the content, you can specify the subject of the article - for this you can, for example, use semantic relations in Wikidata or DBpedia. More details on the automatic article classification process can be found in various scientific works (e.g. for articles or sources).
This article selected the most-developed language versions of Wikipedia with over 1 million articles, including English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Polish and other. After the classification of articles, only those that are dedicated to individual paintings. As a result for English Wikipedia 6503 articles about paintings were found, Italian - 5735 paintings, French - 5433 paintings, Spanish - 3040 paintings, Russian - 2833 paintings, Polish - 2419 paintings, German - 1293 paintings, Portuguese - 1210 paintings, Japanese - 548 paintings, Chinese - 408 paintings and Arabic - 246 paintings.
As mentioned earlier, every Wikipedia article can have different language versions, so we can find out different names of the same object (painting). Using open data on Wikipedia article views we can find out how many times a given article has been viewed on specific days. After collecting data for viewing all Wikipedia articles on paintings in the appropriate language versions April 2020 ranking of the most popular was made. First, the positions of paintings in the ranking are shown, which were obtained by adding up the page views from different language versions for a given painting. Later, the most popular paintings are shown for only one language version of Wikipedia.
Recently we observed that visitors number for some articles was “overclocked” in some periods of time. Therefore, we decide to provide additional modification of the pageview statistics for such cases and change this number (usually by reduction). Fairness of statistics for each article in selected language version in selected months can be assessed using such indicators as: number of the edits and authors, page protection, the rate of citation increasing of the article, popularity statistics of related keywords (phrases) in Google Trends and others.

Are the novels canon? Quotes translated by missstormcaller
Tite KUBO provided canon information and sketches to both Ryōgo NARITA, as well as to Makoto MATSUBARA in order for them to write their novels. KUBO approves of how the information was being interpreted by them and how the stories were being told. The BLEACH anime and movies are not overseen by KUBO in this way, even if he provides them with canon information too. MATSUBARA: After the series had ended, a dream meeting was held with Ryōgo NARITA sensei in attendance, who was working on another “BLEACH” novelisation [CFYOW], here we were allowed to ask KUBO sensei anything that we wanted to learn regarding the setup and so forth. So, whilst checking with KUBO sensei when “I want to present characters like this and I’d like to try something like that”, the story expanded.

CFYOW Afterword translated by schenei... Tite KUBO's commentary

CFYOW questions CFYOW answers
What was the aftermath of the "Thousand Year Blood War" arc? Ichigo recovered his powers soon after. Yhwach's corpse is enslaved as the new undead Soul King by Ichibē. Ichibē revived the other 4 Royal Guard members. Only the high-ranking soul reapers know the truth, and so others instead believe that Ichigo simply defeated Yhwach, protecting the old Soul King.
KOMAMURA is still a wolf who cannot speak, but is publicly declared dead. URAHARA, Yoruichi, Grimmjow, and Nel are healed and alive. Isane was immediately promoted to 4th squad captain after the war because they needed a new head of the medical teams.
Rudbornn was previously managing Las Noches since AIZEN's departure. Loly and Menoly were serving under Rudbornn. HARRIBEL and Nel recently returned to dampen the civil unrest between arrancar and vasto lorde menos in Hueco Mundo, driving them back to their colonies. HARRIBEL is the de facto leader, with the Tres Bestias serving under her. Grimmjow refuses to help when called, but allies himself with them when it suits him.
Liltotto and Giselle are alive, rescued by Jugram's aide on Earth, and taken to an unknown base of operations for the quincy. They recovered their powers after a few months, however they have permanently lost their ability to use vollständig due to Yhwach's auswählen. Bambietta is one of Giselle's zombies. Meninas, Candice, and NaNaNa are a part of Mayuri's corpse corps in Soul Society.
What is the setting of the "Can't Fear Your Own World" novel? 6 months after the "Thousand Year Blood War" arc. Shūhei HISAGI is the lead character. Initially he is interviewing people for the relaunch of the 'Seireitei Bulletin Monthly' newspaper, at Shunsui's request.
Where are Ichigo's family & friends during the "Can't Fear Your Own World" novel? Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Uryū, Rukia, Renji, Isshin, Karin, and Yuzu are out of Town in West Japan. Karin & Yuzu got permission from Isshin to visit the 3rd most spiritually-rich ground in Japan. Rukia & Renji later delivered news of trouble in that location. Isshin & Ichigo followed after Karin & Yuzu. Orihime, Chad, Uryū, Rukia, and Renji follow too. The trouble was likely orchestrated intentionally by the villain, to get them out of Karakura Town. Byakuya & Tōshirō are later sent to investigate disturbances in the World of the Living. These characters are not involved in CFYOW outside of mentioning this information.
Are Chad & Orihime fullbringers? URAHARA explained that both Chad & Orihime are fulbringers, despite their origins being different. Usually the catalyst for a fullbringer to develop their powers comes from the hollow that attacks a mother while she is pregnant. However, for Chad & Orihime, the hōgyoku that was hidden within Rukia at the time, responded to Chad & Orihime's desires to attain power while they were personally attacked by hollows. Despite their different origins, Chad recognised that his powers were still hollow in nature, as are other fullbringers. Orihime's likely is too. They both also possessed fragments of the Soul King, as all fullbringers do, and simply required a catalyst to unlock their fullbring abilities.
What are Soul King fragments? All fullbringers seem to possess fragments of the Soul King, which is the source for their fullbring powers. When the Soul King was 'created', his body was desecrated. Some people seem to arbitrarily inherit fragments of the Soul King them during pregnancy. We don't know why or how they do. Rangiku possessed the nail of the Soul King, which is what AIZEN stole from her soul over 100 years ago to fuel his hōgyoku (although AIZEN didn't know she possessed it at the time). Aura MICHBANE possess the saketsu (binding chain) of the Soul King. Hikone was created and brought to life using a special Soul King fragment provided by Tokinada, after multiple failed attempts initially using other Soul King fragments.
Who is Aura MICHIBANE? Aura is the secondary antagonist of CFYOW. She is a fullbringer who took over XCUTION, and turned it into a cult with hundreds of thousands of members. She is a fullbringer without a personal connection to any one object in particular, and so instead she has a strong connection to everything. Her father Tenshiyo AGATA, was also a fullbringer and kept her isolated and raised her in captivity. As a result, her 'basic' fullbring abilities are considered "Aizen-tier" as a result. Tokinada found her after her father's death. Tokinada tasked her with helping to construct Hikone's body, as well as constructing a replica of the Soul King's Royal Palace, hidden within the Valley of Screams. (Image)
One part of the plans for the XCUTION cult is to inform people in the World of the Living about the existence of Soul Society, inspiring mass suicides, and ultimately sending their souls to Soul Society. Members of the cult on earth possess small handheld devices which erect a barrier around Karakura Town, enabling the replica of the Soul King's Royal Palace to later be transported above the Town from the Valley of Screams. The barrier is only visible and tangible to the spiritually aware, and only keeps out spiritual beings. The devices are similar to the four World-Shifting Binding-Posts previously used to swap Karakura Town with the replica in Soul Society.
Who is Tokinada TSUNAYASHIRO? Tokinada is the main villain of CFYOW. In the past, he was in the academy alongside Shunsui & Jūshirō. He also killed his wife, Kakyō, who was Kaname's friend who originally wielded Suzumushi. Tokinada also has a civil rivalry with Shunsui. (Image)
The Tsunayashiro family are the 3rd revealed great noble family, and they are the leading family of the 4 great noble families overall. Tokinada was only from a branch side family (i.e. the same way that Isshin was from the branch of the Shiba family). The Tsunayashiro family run the Visuals Department, which are a pan-dimensional surveillance network hidden deep under Seireitei. Tokinada recently assassinated the heads of the family, assuming the role of head of the family overall. Specifically, he actually hired assassin to kill himself, but allowed Hikone to kill both the assassin and the heads of the family, all to stage their murder as an assassination.
The Tsunayashiro family have suppressed the existence of fullbringers for years, murdering them in secret, and collecting their Soul King fragments for their own experiments. They appear to want their own family members to sire children who possess Soul King fragments.
Tokinada's ultimate plan is to create a replica of the Soul King's Royal Palace, transport it above Karakura Town, reveal the existence of the afterlife to the World of the Living, and instate Hikone as a Soul King that he can control.
The replica of the Royal Palace is being created within the Valley of Screams. Tokinada learnt about the Valley of Screams from the Ryūdōji family, who are a former noble family who were banished there around a thousand years ago. Ganryū RYŪDŌJI was the main villain from the movie "Bleach: Memories of Nobody".
Tokinada arranged a meeting between the current heads of the 4 great noble families in order to propose the idea of reinstating the Shiba family's noble-status for his own sinister purposes, but was refuted. Byakuya KUCHIKI attended the meeting, and Yoruichi SHIHŌIN was invited to attend the meeting in place of Yūshirō SHIHŌIN. The final unknown great noble family head did not attend due to a fear of all 4 family heads being attacked at once. This was the first meeting of the great noble families heads in a generation.
What is Tokinada's zanpakutō? "Venerate, Kuten Kyōkoku!" [九天鏡谷] (Nine Heavens Mirror Valley): The inherited Tsunayashiro family zanpakutō is believed to be called Kuten Kyōkoku: It conjures an invisible mirror that can reflect zanpakutō attacks.
Tokinada purposefully called his zanpakutō by the wrong name, in order to use a partial release. Similar to what Yumichika does. The name was chosen in part to mock Shunsui's Katen Kyōkotsu, and partially to hide his true abilities.
Similarly, Muramusa is the inherited family zanpakutō of the Kuchiki family, while Shinken Hakkyōken is the inherited zanpakutō of the Ise family.
What is the true name of Tokinada's zanpakutō? "Sip from the four seas, the heavenly shores entwine. Equally duplicate ten thousands, and sharpen, Enrakyoten!" [ 艶羅鏡典] (Law of the Bewitching Lucid Mirror): The true name of the inherited Tsunayashiro family zanpakutō is Enrakyoten. It can mimic any previously observed zanpakutō abilities, at the cost of the user's soul. The curse is similar to the Ise family's Shinken Hakkyōken (i.e. it deteriorates his body).
Enrakyoten has mimicked the following zanpakutō abilities so far: Hanatarō YAMADA's Hisagomaru, 7th Kenpachi KURUYASHIKI's Gagaku Kairō, Izuru KIRA's Wabisuke, Byakuya KUCHIKI's Senbonzakura, Rangiku MATSUMOTO's Haineko, Gin ICHIMARU's Shinso, Genryūsai YAMAMOTO's Ryūjinjakka, Shunsui KYŌRAKU's Katen Kyōkotsu, Rose ŌTORIBASHI's Kinshara, Soi-Fon's Suzumebachi, Zen'nosuke KURUMADANI's Tsuchinamazu, Sōsuke AIZEN's Kyōka Suigetsu, Marechiyo ŌMAEDA's Gegetsuburi, Sajin KOMAMURA's Tenken, Tōshirō HITSUGAYA's Hyōrinmaru, Kaname TŌSEN's Suzumushi, Yumichika AYASEGAWA's Ruri'iro Kujaku, Ichigo KUROSAKI's Zangetsu.
Who is Seinosuke YAMADA? Seinosuke YAMADA is an acquaintance Tokinada. He works in a medical facility for nobles. He is Hanatarō's older brother, and he was Captain UNOHANA's lieutenant 100 years ago. (Image)
Who is Hikone UBUGINU? Hikone is the androgynous henchman of Tokinada. Tokinada tasked Aura with creating Hikone as an artificial hybrid of human, hollow, quincy, and arrancar souls, and Soul King fragments, that were all brought together using a special Soul King fragment that could hold Hikone's body together in ways previous Soul King fragments could not. Hikone also possess Gremmy's discarded brain which was discarded after the TYBW arc and found by Tokinada. When Hikone was brought to life, he at first experienced one of Gremmy's memories. Hikone is Tokinada's desired Soul King candidate. Tokinada gifted Hikone the name UBUGINU. The Ubuginu family formerly served the Tsunayshiro family. Tokinada gave Hikone a zanpakutō with a blade "filled with white light", called Ikomikidomoe, stolen from Ōetsu's Royal City. Hikone can use traits and abilities of the soul reapers, quincies, fullbringers, hollows, and arrancars. This includes blut, cero, and hierro. Hikone can even combine shunpo, sonido, hirenkyaku, and bringer light. (Image)
What is Hikone's zanpakutō? "Ikomikidomoe" [已己巳己巴] ("Ikomiki" is a phrase to describe things which are similar. "Tomoe" refers to spiralling comma shapes.): Ikomikidomoe was an ancient menos, and rival of Barragan, from thousands of years ago. He had the ability to retain the spiritual-presume of whomever he consumed, and chose not to evolve into a vasto lorde menos. He was renamed by Ichibē and sealed by Ōetsu into the form of a zanpakutō because his spiritual-pressure was to great to be extinguished. As a zanpakutō he's described as a sword "filled with white light", and with dark spots. Ikomikidomoe constantly banters with Hikone, can open portals through the Garganta at will, and possesses three different release commands. Ikomikidomoe can only be wielded by Hikone, but could possibly be wielded by Ichigo or GINJŌ too. (Image)
"Orbit the stars, Ikomikidomoe!": The 1st release command transforms the blade into a long, vasto lorde-esque, tendril-arm. First used in Hueco Mundo against the arrancars and quincies.
"Send them to their burials, and engrave them in memory, Ikomikidomoe!": The 2nd release command conjures a large hollow that Hikone rides, almost like like a serpentine-looking Hooleer. It's as large as a gillian menos, and has spiritual-pressure comparable to a vasto lorde menos. First used in Soul Society against the arrancars, quincies, and fullbringers. (Image)
Hikone can also use Ikomikidomoe to conjure a horde of huge-hollows, each as powerful as an adjuchas menos. First used the Valley of Screams, and defeated using Shinji's bankai. It's unclear which release command is used to conjure these hollows. (Image)
"Hatch the deceased, Ikomikidomoe!": The 3rd release command conjures another large hollow, but smaller than the 2nd release, and closer in size to an adjuchas menos, with spiritual-pressure higher than a vasto lorde menos arrancar. First used the Valley of Screams against the arrancars.
What is Hikone's bankai/resurrección? "Ikomikidomoe Hō'ōraku Hakkei" [已己巳己巴 鳳落八景] (Eight picturesque views of the Fenghuang's fall). This is the full name of Ikomikidomoe that Ichibē gave him. Hikone takes on a more beast-like/hollow-like physical features, and his robes turn black. It's unclear whether or not this is a bankai or a resurrección, and is likely a mix of the two. Upon releasing, it also releases the limits of Hikone's hidden power. It's visually similar to Ichigo's mastered hollow form used against Yhwach, as well as GINJŌ's bankai form, which is the full release of his hollow power.
What is the truth behind GINJŌ's time as a former agent of the soul reapers? Back when GINJŌ was an agent of the soul reapers, who presumably worked with Captain UKITAKE and the 13th squad, his group of friends were fullbringers (which included Aura's father, Tenshiyo AGATA). The Tsunayashiro family suppressed the existence of fullbringers for years, and so Tokinada urged UKITAKE to spy on GINJŌ via the soul reaper badge. Eventually Tokinada also secretly sent assassins to kill GINJŌ's fullbringer friends. UKITAKE was unaware of this, and so when GINJŌ killed the assassins in retaliation, UKITAKE had no choice but to declare GINJŌ a traitor.
What is Shinji HIRAKO's bankai? "Bankai, Sakashima Yokoshima Happōfusagari!" [逆様邪八宝塞] (Reversed Evil Eight Treasure Blockade): Shinji's bankai inverts the sense of friend-and-foe across anyone within the vicinity of his bankai, while Shinji stands on a large flower construct. His sword becomes a staff with a large circular form on the front end. It's a wide-range bankai, dangerous to use around allies. His bankai is useless against an enemy one-on-one, and is best used against multiple enemies at once. (Image)
What is Shūhei's true shikai ability? Shūhei's zanpakutō represents the cycle of life and death. Shūhei entangles himself and his opponent in the extended chains of his zanpakutō. The chain is the main part of the zanpakutō, not the blades. If Shūhei's body or the chains are destroyed, Shūhei's spiritual-energy restores them as if no damage had been done.
scheneizel says: ...Shuhei hated the 'death' aspect of Kazeshini, but now Kazeshini is representing 'life'. That's why Shūhei has two weapons, two separate concepts, connected by a chain. The chain is important here. Here, we see life and death entwined together, bound together...To fuse life and death is not immortality, it is just the cycle of life.
What is Shūhei's bankai? "Bankai, Fushi no Kōjyō!" [風死絞縄] (Undying Hangman's Noose): Shūhei conjures a large black orb of chains far overhead, which reflects shadows across the surrounding area. It's an all-encompassing spatial bankai similar to Kaname's. Thick black chains extend from the orb into the ground like a tree. The chains extend and wrap around both the necks of Shūhei and his opponent. Their spiritual-energies are drained in order to continuously reverse the damage inflicted upon one another. It's impossible for Shūhei or his opponent to kill one another. Any wounds/damage from before the the activation are not healed. (Image)
selynx says: Fun fact, 風死 when pronounced as "fushi" [it] can be homophonous with 不死, which means "deathless". So the whole name can also sound like "Undying Hangman's Noose" or "Noose of the Undying" when spoken. Which is probably intentional given the effects.
Who are a part of the alliance? The alliance meet at Kūkaku's House, and Mayuri opens up a portal to the Valley of Screams for them to all go after Tokinada.
Soul Reapers: Shunsui, Nanao, Yoruichi, Shinji, Kensei, Kenpachi, Ikkaku, Yumichika.
Fullbringers: GINJŌ, TSUKISHIMA, Giriko.
Arrancars: HARRIBEL, Nelliel, Grimmjow.
Quincies: Liltotto, Giselle, Bambietta.
Kurostuchi Corpse Corps: Dordonii, Cirucci, Luppi, Charlotte, Meninas, Candice, NaNaNa.
Shūhei, URAHARA, and Yukio aren't with the alliance, but arrive later from Karakura Town.
What is the secret history of the Soul King and the 5 Great Noble Families? Ichibē recounts the Original Sin and the Soul King's origins to the Zero Squad and their Holy Soldiers: Hundreds of millions of years after Creation, there was a world without life nor death. Only humans and souls existed together in a single realm of existence within a self-contained cycle. Eventually, hollows came into existence, disrupting the cycle by devouring souls. Inevitably, the first menos soon came into being too, slowing the cycle of souls, and ultimately leading to a future where all souls would be eventually consumed into one menos. But almost in response to its existence, the Soul King was born. The Soul King vanquished the menos, and the self-contained cycle of souls continued once more. Unfortunately, the world eventually fell back into chaos as the Soul King continued to vanquish hollows. Soon after, 5 ancestral heads of the once 5 great noble families gathered. They intended to pool their ideas to serve a shared vision of changing the state of the world.
The Tsunayashiro ancestor was afraid the power of the Soul King would one day be used against them. An unknown rival family ancestor wanted to cover up the 'pit of chaos' that would become Hell. The Kuchiki ancestor wanted to implement a new world order to bring balance to to the world. The Shihōin ancestor wanted to widen the cycle of re-incarnation to avoid stagnation of their world. The Shiba ancestor wanted to create a method to purify hollows, reverting them back into souls. (They recognised that hollows had lost hearts that were worth saving.) And so, a shared goal was born to separate the World of the Living from the dead. At the Tsunayashiro ancestor's insistence, the Soul King was bound and sealed within a crystal.
The Soul King's power of The Almighty served as the keystone to separate and maintain the 3 worlds. The World of the Living for humans, Soul Society for the souls, and Hueco Mundo for the hollows. (The remains of the original menos and the hollows that came after, are the sands of Hueco Mundo.) Yet the Tsunayashiro ancestor took things even further still, due to fearing the Soul King's power. First, the Soul King's "Right Arm of Stagnation" and "Left Arm of Progress" were dismembered. Then was his heart, organs, and legs over time. Leaving the Soul King as a powerless lynchpin and slave.
Ichibē mentioned that the Shiba ancestor attempted to sacrifice himself in place of the Soul King and adamantly opposed the Tsuayashiro ancestor's influence on their actions. And so in response, the Tsunayashiro ancestor 'erased the Shiba from history'. Kirio mentioned that Kaien and the Shiba family still retain this rebellious, chivalrous nature today. Ichibē mentioned that Ichigo, a descendant of the Shiba family, had the best qualities to replace the Soul King. It is unclear if Yhwach is the son of the Soul King, or a reincarnation of his power. Yhwach is considered the originator of the quinces, while the Soul King is the source of their power. Yhwach wanted to liberate his 'father' from his fate as the Soul King.
Other information Ururu and Jinta are specialised mod souls similar to Nemu. Ryūnosuke YUKI, is Rikichi YUKI's little brother. Rikichi is now the 3rd Officer of the 6th Squad. Shino MADARAME is either a sister or cousin of Ikkaku MADARAME. They do not know which she is. Shino's shikai transforms her zanpakutō into a 'naginata' style weapon. Nico KUNA is Mashiro KUNA's little sister. Nico is a lab assistant in the 12th Squad's SDRI. Dordonii was originally replaced by Nelliel as the 3rd Espada. Luppi shares destruction as his aspect of death, just like Grimmjow. HARRIBEL can use water-based attacks without releasing her resurrección. Barragan was a natural a vasto lorde menos arrancar, and the oldest known hollow. Gremmy is considered the strongest Sternritter who can only be handled by Yhwach.
The four common high-speed movement techniques all have subtle differences. Hirenkyaku: When a quincy uses hirenkyaku, it is a far more efficient technique than shunpo in terms of spiritual-energy consumption. Sonido: When an arrancar uses sonido, their spiritual-pressure cannot be detected during the instance it is used. Bringer Light: When a fullbringer uses bringer light for high-speed movement, they are drawing on the dormant spiritual-energy or spiritual-matter in the surface they are standing on, enabling the surface itself to propel them at high-speed. This also reduces the disturbance of spiritual-matter in the surrounding environment to a minimum, making it more difficult for their spiritual-pressure to be detected during the instance it is used. Shunpo: When a soul reaper uses shunpo, it propels them forwards at high-speed, but seemingly without any additional traits.
Every bankai has a weakness. CFYOW states that for example: Zangetsu's bankai uses a violent expenditure of spiritual-pressure. Senbonzakura's bankai has a safe zone close to Byakuya's body where the petals cannot reach. Nozarashi's bankai has an abnormal toll on the user's body. Katen Kyōkotsu's bankai risks involving surrounding allies in the effects of the bankai. While SAFWY states for example: Kyōka Suigetsu's bankai cannot affect a target who has not first seen the initial shikai ritual. The bankai of the 7th Kenpachi KURUYASHIKI, Gagaku Kairō, couldn’t be used for another 6 months after each use, and it risks devouring everyone within the vicinity of its effects. The bankai of the 8th Kenpachi AZASHIRO, Urozakuro, prevents AZASHIRO from physically using his body directly, he can instead only act through whatever he is fused with.

Are the novels canon? Quotes translated by missstormcaller
Tite KUBO provided canon information and sketches to both Ryôgo NARITA, as well as to Makoto MATSUBARA in order for them to write their novels. KUBO approves of how the information was being interpreted by them and how the stories were being told. The BLEACH anime and movies are not overseen by KUBO in this way, even if he provides them with canon information too. MATSUBARA: After the series had ended, a dream meeting was held with Ryôgo NARITA sensei in attendance, who was working on another “BLEACH” novelisation [CFYOW], here we were allowed to ask KUBO sensei anything that we wanted to learn regarding the setup and so forth. So, whilst checking with KUBO sensei when “I want to present characters like this and I’d like to try something like that”, the story expanded.
In the novel “WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU”, there is a description which mentions that Uryû is at medical school and Ichigo is also said to be attending university, but does Ichigo study a general university course? KUBO: Yes he does. Though I didn’t specifically depict it within the story, based on the setup, I feel he would be studying English literature.
In Ryôgo NARITA’s novels, HARRIBEL and Nelliel have both become leading figures. KUBO: It’s great that those two are leaders!
Isn’t HIRAKO supposed to release his bankai in NARITA’s novel too? KUBO: Narita put forward a request, asking “may I get Hirako and Hisagi to release their Bankai?” and he followed up with “if it’s okay with you, please tell me their names” to which I replied “I will think about it”, I finally finished thinking about it just the other day. Though, as a matter of fact, I haven’t relayed that information to him yet.
I’m looking forward to it (laughs). Do you associate ideas from the impression of the character? KUBO: I draw out a great number of words by way of considering the abilities of the technique, the original Zanpakutô name and the character’s image. After consulting with Narita about the establishment of Hisagi’s Bankai, I said “perhaps this will do” and the direction I took became something like “bodies that are tethered together”, consequently I began writing a list of all the words relating to “binding”, “rope”, “chains” and “prisoner”. By establishing a successful link among all of that, it becomes a matter of combining the words and such….
So then, your process begins with the task of expanding a list of vocabulary first and foremost. KUBO: That’s right.
Which character’s bankai name caused you the most struggle to devise? KUBO: This time, Hirako and Hisagi are probably up there in first place (laughs). Hisagi might have taken the most time.

CFYOW Afterword translated by scheneizel Tite KUBO's commentary

CFYOW questions CFYOW answers
What was the aftermath of the "Thousand Year Blood War" arc? Ichigo recovered his powers soon after. YHWACH's corpse is enslaved as the new undead Soul King by Ichibê. Ichibê revived the other 4 Royal Guard members.
Shûhei HISAGI is the lead character. Initially he is interviewing people for the relaunch of the 'Seireitei Bulletin Monthly' newspaper, at Shunsui's request.
Where are Ichigo's family & friends during the "Can't Fear Your Own World" novel? Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Uryû, Rukia, Renji, Isshin, Karin, and Yuzu are out of Town in West Japan. Karin & Yuzu got permission from Isshin to visit the 3rd most spiritually-rich ground in Japan. Rukia & Renji later delivered news of trouble in that location. Isshin & Ichigo followed after Karin & Yuzu. Orihime, Chad, Uryû, Rukia, and Renji follow too. The trouble was likely orchestrated intentionally by the villain, to get them out of Karakura Town. Byakuya & Tôshirô are later sent to investigate disturbances in the World of the Living.
However, for Chad & Orihime, the hôgyoku that was hidden within Rukia at the time, responded to Chad & Orihime's desires to attain power while they were personally attacked by hollows.
Rangiku possessed the nail of the Soul King, which is what AIZEN stole from her soul over 100 years ago to fuel his hôgyoku (although AIZEN didn't know she possessed it at the time).
In the past, he was in the academy alongside Shunsui & Jûshirô. He also killed his wife, Kakyô, who was TÔSEN's friend who originally wielded Suzumushi.
Tokinada learnt about the Valley of Screams from the Ryûdôji family, who are a former noble family who were banished there around a thousand years ago. Ganryû RYÛDÔJI was the main villain from the movie "Bleach: Memories of Nobody".
Tokinada arranged a meeting between the current heads of the 4 great noble families in order to propose the idea of reinstating the Shiba family's noble-status for his own sinister purposes, but was refuted. Byakuya attended the meeting, and Yoruichi was invited to attend the meeting in place of Yûshirô . The final unknown great noble family head did not attend due to a fear of all 4 family heads being attacked at once. This was the first meeting of the great noble families heads in a generation.
What is Tokinada's zanpakutô? "Venerate, Kuten Kyôkoku!" [九天鏡谷] (Nine Heavens Mirror Valley): The inherited Tsunayashiro family zanpakutô is believed to be called Kuten Kyôkoku: It conjures an invisible mirror that can reflect zanpakutô attacks.
Tokinada purposefully called his zanpakutô by the wrong name, in order to use a partial release. Similar to what Yumichika does. The name was chosen in part to mock Shunsui's Katen Kyôkotsu, and partially to hide his true abilities.
Similarly, Muramusa is the inherited family zanpakutô of the Kuchiki family, while Shinken Hakkyôken is the inherited zanpakutô of the Ise family.
What is the true name of Tokinada's zanpakutô? "Sip from the four seas, the heavenly shores entwine. Equally duplicate ten thousands, and sharpen, Enrakyoten!" [ 艶羅鏡典] (Law of the Bewitching Lucid Mirror): The true name of the inherited Tsunayashiro family zanpakutô is Enrakyoten. It can mimic any previously observed zanpakutô abilities, at the cost of the user's soul. The curse is similar to the Ise family's Shinken Hakkyôken (i.e. it deteriorates his body).
Enrakyoten has mimicked the following zanpakutô abilities so far: Hanatarô YAMADA's Hisagomaru, 7th Kenpachi KURUYASHIKI's Gagaku Kairô, Izuru KIRA's Wabisuke, Byakuya KUCHIKI's Senbonzakura, Rangiku MATSUMOTO's Haineko, Gin ICHIMARU's Shinso, Genryûsai YAMAMOTO's Ryûjinjakka, Shunsui KYÔRAKU's Katen Kyôkotsu, Rose ÔTORIBASHI's Kinshara, Soi-Fon's Suzumebachi, Zen'nosuke KURUMADANI's Tsuchinamazu, Sôsuke AIZEN's Kyôka Suigetsu, Marechiyo ÔMAEDA's Gegetsuburi, Sajin KOMAMURA's Tenken, Tôshirô HITSUGAYA's Hyôrinmaru, Kaname TÔSEN's Suzumushi, Yumichika AYASEGAWA's Ruri'iro Kujaku, Ichigo KUROSAKI's Zangetsu.
Who is Seinosuke YAMADA? Seinosuke YAMADA is an acquaintance Tokinada. He works in a medical facility for nobles. He is Hanatarô's older brother, and he was Captain UNOHANA's lieutenant 100 years ago.
Tokinada gave Hikone a zanpakutô with a blade "filled with white light", called Ikomikidomoe, stolen from Ôetsu's Royal City. Hikone can use traits and abilities of the soul reapers, quincies, fullbringers, hollows, and arrancars. This includes blut, cero, and hierro. Hikone can even combine shunpo, sonido, hirenkyaku, and bringer light. (Image)
What is Hikone's zanpakutô? "Ikomikidomoe" [已己巳己巴] ("Ikomiki" is a phrase to describe things which are similar. "Tomoe" refers to spiralling comma shapes.): Ikomikidomoe was an ancient menos, and rival of Baraggan, from thousands of years ago. He had the ability to retain the spiritual-presume of whomever he consumed, and chose not to evolve into a vasto lorde menos. He was renamed by Ichibê and sealed by Ôetsu into the form of a zanpakutô because his spiritual-pressure was to great to be extinguished. As a zanpakutô he's described as a sword "filled with white light", and with dark spots. Ikomikidomoe constantly banters with Hikone, can open portals through the Garganta at will, and possesses three different release commands. Ikomikidomoe can only be wielded by Hikone, but could possibly be wielded by Ichigo or GINJÔ too.
"Ikomikidomoe Hô'ôraku Hakkei" [已己巳己巴 鳳落八景] (Eight picturesque views of the Fenghuang's fall). This is the full name of Ikomikidomoe that Ichibê gave him. Hikone takes on a more beast-like/hollow-like physical features, and his robes turn black. It's unclear whether or not this is a bankai or a resurrección, and is likely a mix of the two. Upon releasing, it also releases the limits of Hikone's hidden power. It's visually similar to Ichigo's mastered hollow form used against YHWACH, as well as GINJÔ's bankai form, which is the full release of his hollow power.
What is the truth behind GINJÔ's time as a former agent of the soul reapers? Back when GINJÔ was an agent of the soul reapers, who presumably worked with Captain UKITAKE and the 13th squad, his group of friends were fullbringers (which included Aura's father, Tenshiyo AGATA). The Tsunayashiro family suppressed the existence of fullbringers for years, and so Tokinada urged UKITAKE to spy on GINJÔ via the soul reaper badge. Eventually Tokinada also secretly sent assassins to kill GINJÔ's fullbringer friends. UKITAKE was unaware of this, and so when GINJÔ killed the assassins in retaliation, UKITAKE had no choice but to declare GINJÔ a traitor.
What is Shinji HIRAKO's bankai? "Bankai, Sakashima Yokoshima Happôfusagari!" [逆様邪八宝塞] (Reversed Evil Eight Treasure Blockade): Shinji's bankai inverts the sense of friend-and-foe across anyone within the vicinity of his bankai, while Shinji stands on a large flower construct. His sword becomes a staff with a large circular form on the front end. It's a wide-range bankai, dangerous to use around allies. His bankai is useless against an enemy one-on-one, and is best used against multiple enemies at once. (Image)
What is Shûhei's true shikai ability? Shûhei's zanpakutô represents the cycle of life and death. Shûhei entangles himself and his opponent in the extended chains of his zanpakutô. The chain is the main part of the zanpakutô, not the blades. If Shûhei's body or the chains are destroyed, Shûhei's spiritual-energy restores them as if no damage had been done.
scheneizel says: ...Shûhei hated the 'death' aspect of Kazeshini, but now Kazeshini is representing 'life'. That's why Shûhei has two weapons, two separate concepts, connected by a chain. The chain is important here. Here, we see life and death entwined together, bound together...To fuse life and death is not immortality, it is just the cycle of life.
What is Shûhei's bankai? "Bankai, Fushi no Kôjyô!" [風死絞縄] (Undying Hangman's Noose): Shûhei conjures a large black orb of chains far overhead, which reflects shadows across the surrounding area. It's an all-encompassing spatial bankai similar to TÔSEN's. Thick black chains extend from the orb into the ground like a tree. The chains extend and wrap around both the necks of Shûhei and his opponent. Their spiritual-energies are drained in order to continuously reverse the damage inflicted upon one another. It's impossible for Shûhei or his opponent to kill one another. Any wounds/damage from before the activation are not healed. (Image)
selynx says: Fun fact, 風死 when pronounced as "fushi" [it] can be homophonous with 不死, which means "deathless". So the whole name can also sound like "Undying Hangman's Noose" or "Noose of the Undying" when spoken. Which is probably intentional given the effects.
scheneizel's in depth analysis: Shûhei's bankai; its contrast to Kaname's bankai, and the depiction of the Soul King and the original sin through Fushi no Kôjyô
Who are a part of the alliance? The alliance meet at Kûkaku's House, and Mayuri opens up a portal to the Valley of Screams for them to all go after Tokinada.
Soul Reapers: Shunsui, Nanao, Yoruichi, Shinji, Kensei, Kenpachi, Ikkaku, Yumichika.
Fullbringers: GINJÔ, TSUKISHIMA, Giriko.
Arrancars: HARRIBEL, Nelliel, Grimmjow.
Quincies: Liltotto, Giselle, Bambietta.
Kurostuchi Corpse Corps: Dordonii, Cirucci, Luppi, Charlotte, Meninas, Candice, NaNaNa.
Shûhei, URAHARA, and Yukio aren't with the alliance, but arrive later from Karakura Town.
What is the secret history of the Soul King and the 5 Great Noble Families? Ichibê recounts the Original Sin and the Soul King's origins to the Zero Squad and their Holy Soldiers: Hundreds of millions of years after Creation, there was a world without life nor death.
The Shihôin ancestor wanted to widen the cycle of re-incarnation to avoid stagnation of their world.
Ichibê mentioned that the Shiba ancestor attempted to sacrifice himself in place of the Soul King and adamantly opposed the Tsuayashiro ancestor's influence on their actions. And so in response, the Tsunayashiro ancestor 'erased the Shiba from history'. Kirio mentioned that Kaien and the Shiba family still retain this rebellious, chivalrous nature today. Ichibê mentioned that Ichigo, a descendant of the Shiba family, had the best qualities to replace the Soul King.
Ryûnosuke YUKI, is Rikichi YUKI's little brother. Rikichi is now the 3rd Officer of the 6th Squad. Shino MADARAME is either a sister or cousin of Ikkaku MADARAME. They do not know which she is. Shino's shikai transforms her zanpakutô into a 'naginata' style weapon. Nico KUNA is Mashiro KUNA's little sister. Nico is a lab assistant in the 12th Squad's SDRI. Dordonii was originally replaced by Nelliel as the 3rd Espada. Luppi shares destruction as his aspect of death, just like Grimmjow JAEGERJAQUEZ. HARRIBEL can use water-based attacks without releasing her resurrección. Baraggan was a natural a vasto lorde menos arrancar, and the oldest known hollow.
Katen Kyôkotsu's bankai risks involving surrounding allies in the effects of the bankai. While SAFWY states for example: Kyôka Suigetsu's bankai cannot affect a target who has not first seen the initial shikai ritual. The bankai of the 7th Kenpachi KURUYASHIKI, Gagaku Kairô, couldn’t be used for another 6 months after each use, and it risks devouring everyone within the vicinity of its effects. The bankai of the 8th Kenpachi AZASHIRO, Urozakuro, prevents AZASHIRO from physically using his body directly, he can instead only act through whatever he is fused with.
