2020.09.19 19:16 Mmetr Trying to understand BATs unique value proposition, because the market has not reacted in the way that I would expect

I have been trying to outline the unique growth factors that will contribute to this projects growth. This question has been prompted, because of the markets rationale to keep the price at a steady .15 - .30 cents price range.
To preface I am a digital marketer and not intertwined closely to the crypto space. But my background in sales and marketing in the startup space over the past couple of years has taught me what to look for in successful businesses.
My rationale for investing into the BAT ecosystem is that:
  1. The Brave Browser Many cryptocurrency projects rely on the hope that the business will develop a new software or that there new tool will change the world (or something like that). The Brave browser has growth patterns that are not to be taken lightly.
For more info see: https://brave.com/transparency/
Monthly Active Users 18.3 Million Daily Active Users 6.1 Million
We also have to take into the account how transaction size from the Brave initiated BAT purchases has pretty much 3-5x over the past year.
This is telling me that businesses are either spending more on ads (retention) or the Brave team is acquiring more customers. (Net new customers)
  1. Industry Momentum
As other blockchain / cryptocurrency business go online and gain traction in their markets and as more investor capital comes into the market, in my opinion, so will companies marketing budgets.
I see Brave being well positioned as being a great acquisition channel for companies targeting other blockchain/cryptocurrency interested users.
What I am trying to say is that if we’re selling a blockchain/cryptocurrency project, I would definitely consider Brave as a channel to put my marketing dollars into because I would have strong assumptions about the audience that uses the tool.
  1. Geopolitical
The political scene around privacy is ramping up across westernized countries. We are seeing this with google in the EU. Facebook during the election, and many other such events that you can easily find with a google search. When governments start trending in this direction of data privacy, that is in favor of Braves overall mission. This in my opinion sets it up for longer term success rather than a potential road block for growth. In fact, it may even accelerate its growth.
  1. Chromium + Privacy + Blockchain
Knowing that developers can continue to use chromium with Brave only users acquisition. Now include the elements of privacy and blockchain, these are also very strong features that should contribute growth.
  1. Sales and Marketing Team
Brave has a strong sales and marketing function. They are regularly featured in headlines and across high authority websites and news sources. I have read about the team and just glimpsing at their social strategy has given me confidence that they know what they are doing.
I’m sure there are a ton of other growth factors that I have not listed. I would love to hear what else I am missing and your take on why the market hasn’t reacted as positively as I’d expect.

2020.09.19 17:10 Loetmichel Whatever you do: Dont make him angry. Part 6

Chapter 6:
Previous Next
After Ra'sha left the Bridge with the two remaining Guards the Sergeant and her crew was alone with me and Sial. She came over to the captains chair and said:” My crew and me have decided. We want to be delivered back to the Orbital station we started from.”
She looked a bit distressed, so I answered: “Sure, if that is your wish, I can do that. May I ask what makes you so Frightened? Is it Sial? I can assure you that neither her not me will attack you unless you attack first. I have to warn you though that attacking me or her would not go well. You see, we both come from a world that has more than twice the gravity of Rabok. And I am a predator as well as she is. My Species fought a few wars, and I am a trained soldier, even if I didn't had to kill anyone until a few weeks ago. I can probably kill you without even trying, and that would be a sad thing, because so far you have done nothing bad to either me or my crew, despite your orders.”
She looked at me in surprise: “Why would you care so much about someone that tried to kill you? I cant understand why we are still living, if we would have failed an attack on any other ship we would already be gunned down.”
I grinned again. “That is no answer to my question, but I will answer yours. We humans have a pretty bloody history with wars at every corner. Its my personal believe and that of most of modern humans that every live is precious, and while I am able to kill I don't enjoy it and would rather help someone to overcome the reason why they thought they have to attack me. Before you ask: I am aware that that puts me at risk of getting backstabbed, but considering that I can easily take all 11 of you without even breaking in sweat its a low risk. So I was willing to take it for yours sake. And my crew has seen what I am capable of, so they trust my judgment. Now that you know my motives, would you please tell my why you look so distressed?”
The Sergeant looked pained now. Her ears laid flat against her head. She looked down at the floor, then she straightened up and looked me in the eyes. “This may be a mistake, but you were kind and generous to us so far. My fellow soldiers and me were pressed into service by Xi'par due her kidnapping our families and threatening to kill them should we not do her bidding. So we have to go back to the station and face the punishment for failure, or our men and children will die. The fact that she is in Jail now will not make a difference. She will not stay long, she has friends in all the right places. Please deliver us back so our families may live.” She fell on her knees and begged the last part.
I was shocked. It took me a moment to gather my wits, get out of the chair and kneel down in front of her. “I am sorry, I didn't know. I will have a talk with the Matriarch tomorrow, after that we will launch as soon as possible and bring you back if you wish so. There is also the option that I mention it to the Matriarch. Maybe she is able to provide answers? I am willing to do whatever is in my might to get your families free. It is one of humanities greatest rules that we will not stand idly aside when we notice slavery. And forcing you into military service by kidnapping your loved ones is even worse than slavery. “
She looked at my face. I am really angry now. It seemed like it showed even to her eyes, because she flinched at seeing my expression.”I...I don't think the Matriarch can do much, half her police force is corrupt and the military isn't that much better. And don't forget that we have a criminal record here. We are not much more than some criminals to her. I doubt she would do much, even if she knew where our families are.” She paused. “Why are you so angry all of a sudden?”
I forced myself to a more restrained face.”Because I cant stand injustice, regardless of whom it is done to. I am not angry at you, but believe me, if Xi'par were here right now she would NOT be safe. Actually that is a good idea. I will ask the Matriarch if she can give me some time with her alone. Xi'par will tell me where your bretheren are. I can assure you that.”
The Sergeant looked at me intensely. After a while she said: “Yes. I can see that. I still don't know why you would do such things for us, but I can see that she would spill everything she knows when you look at her like that. You wouldn't even have to get physical. You are quite scary when you are angry, you know that?”
I smiled mildly.”Ask my crew. I believe some of them had nightmares the first few nights after getting aboard. It took quite a while to convince them that I meant no harm to them after they had seen me kill those pirates.”
“All of them? Aren't there usually around 50 armed Xinthi crew on those pirate Vessels?” she wondered.
“47, including the two guards of the brig that I knocked unconscious when I broke out. But only armed with plasma pistols. Humans are pretty resilient. They hit me two times with their pistols, hurts like hell and gives nasty burns. That's when my memory went a bit blurry. I did kill the last few with my hands and the help of Sial here after the plasma pistol I had snagged from the guard ran out of ammo.” I said, a bit embarrassed.
“In Hindsight I would have preferred to only incapacitate them but I wasn't thinking exactly clearly after the plasma burns and them torturing the Lieutenant. Also back then I didn't know if I had killed the two guards by hitting them with my fist on the head or only knocked out. I had no idea how their body worked back then.” I continued.
“I see. I hope you believe me when I say that we will not do any aggressive act until you set us off at the station. Not only because it would be useless, You or your Pet would overpower us with ease, but also because you showed us mercy when you didn't have to. We are in your debt and will act accordingly until you bring us back.”. She seemed to not being able to decide between fear about the future and relaxation about me being as benevolent as I could muster.
I remotely opened the Bridge doors. “Please follow me, you will have to stay in the two remaining cabins. It will be a bit packed in there, but I will see to it that we get some more beds in there, and be it only for one night. I trust you enough to not lock the doors, but be aware that the ship is able to see you all the time and is also able to knock you out or worse as well.
Halfway to the quarters I saw Ra'sha and what I assumed to be the Trader entering the mess hall at the end of the passageway.
“Ah, good idea!” I said, turning around to the Sergeant and her team. “You must be hungry and thirsty, too? Care to have lunch with me?”
“Actually, yes. The food on the station is gruesome. Standard military rations every day.” She answered, earning some nods from her team.
“Folow me, then.” I walked into the mess hall, explained how to use the dispensers and then urged them to sit down. When we all sat I looked over to Ra'sha and the trader and waved them over.
“Ra'sha, the Sergeant and the team decided they want to be back at the station. I agreed for them to stay until tomorrow when we are done with the trader and my Matriarch visit. How is the trade going?” I asked her. “All good, we are wating for Valerie to make some samples and I thought to deliver Or'gnu here the full amount tomorrow while you are with the Matriarch, if thats OK with you.” she answered.
“Also: Or'gnu: this is my Captain.” She introduced us.
“Pleased to meet you, Or'gnu. Do you have any requests or is all well?” I addressed her.
“Actually yes if you don't mind. I recognized those Soldiers here as Xi'pars girls. What are they doing on your ship?” she said.
“Easy to explain: they tried to board us, we captured them. As no harm is done I will bring them back to their station as that is their wish.”
WHAT?” She blurted out, glaring at the assault team. “They attacked you and you will ferry them home as a thank you?”
“Lets say I understand their reasons for trying. You don't happen to know where Xi'par would 'store' some hostages, especially men and children, do you?” I answered.
Or'gnus face started to look less angry and more compassionate. “Ah. I see. Knowing Xi'par that makes perfect sense. Actually I may have an idea or two where they may be IF they are still alive. Not that it would help much, the compound is heavily fortified and the police here is notorious for being corrupt and looking the other way. Still I would have shot down their shuttle as soon as it entered range would I have been in your place. You are a generous man, Captain. First you are willing to trade your ships resources away so that some Rincor you have barely known can live without poverty, now I hear that you captured Xi'pars soldiers without a single casualty and intend to bring them back where they want to be? That is pretty much unheard of in the Union. Are all humans like you?”
“No, not really. We have our share of assholes, too. Like any species, I assume.” I said. “But I am an explorer and lately a fully accredited Ambassador for Humanity so I try to be at my Species best. That said: I intend to do more. If I get a chance I will try to get their families free so they don't have to be slaves any more. If its one thing modern humans hate with a fervor its slavery. We did it to our own bretheren a few 1000 years back and are still ashamed of it.” I replied.
“The little I can do to help you with that goal I will do. I already did a good deal with Your XO, I will add the intel I have to it at no cost. Not totally altruistic, I admit. Xi'par is my competition, and one that never shied away from the worst methods if she thinks she can get away with it. I want to see her fall and not stand up this time. As I said to Ra'sha already I don't think she will stay in prison for long.” Or'gnu uttered with a hate in her voice.
We all had a really nice dinner and chat after that, the assault team and Or'gnu bombarding me with qustions about humanity, I learning a lot about Rincor society. Eventually Or'gnu got her samples and went home after promising to be back next morning with a truck large enough for the goods and intel about where the families of our 'guests' were, said guests retreated to the two empty cabins after I ordered Valerie to make a few more mattresses for them. For one night that should be OK they assured me repeatedly.
Next Morning I went to the Matriarch as promised. Meanwhile Ra'sha prepared The goods Valerie made over night and waited for Or'gnu to return with the trucking.
I took Ra'sha aside. “Be careful. I don't trust your police all that much, what Or'gnu said yesterday was not that unheard of in my society a few millenia back. When Xi'par gets out she will try to get revenge on me and you. I will be back in the evening and I don't want to hear that you got in danger or hurt, you understand me?”
Ra'shas ears wiggled. “You don't want your XO to get hurt? How unique!”
I embraced her in my arms for a second. “No, you fool. I love you and would never forgive myself if something happened to you and I could have prevented it!”
She kissed me, then looked around if any of her crewmates had seen a thing. They all pretended to be engrained in their work but I saw at least half their ears wiggling.
Ra'sha saw it, poked me in the shoulder and said “Dont be such a MAN, worrying about me. O off you go to the Matriarch. I can handle Valerie and the crew for a few hours!”
So I did, not pointing out that I am indeed a man. I may have been a lone explorer with not much experience in women or feelings. But I knew for sure that angering her would not me beneficial to me or our new relationship.
I arrived at the Matriarchs private rooms not much later, bowed to her slightly after being let in by her guards and greeted her. “Hello again, Matriarch. Or should I add some kind of honorific?”
“Hello Tom! No, either Matriarch or Xu'gnu would do well. This is an informal meeting after all, I am just curious about you. And if I remember correctly you had a request?” She answered.
“Yes, I do have a request. But I have no idea how to express it now, I need to know more about your society first.” I paused. “So how about we make that a 'One question and answer each' game?”
She wiggled her ears amused. “Sure. May I start?” I nodded. “Then I want to know more about your society as well. What kind of government do you have?”
“That is not an easy question. Let me see. We have a democracy mostly, every human citizen can elect a representative of their country or colony to the Senate.” I tried to recall my school education to make our political system simplified enough for an alien.
“While we do have a President its the Senate that holds all the power and decides about laws and actions.” I thought about it for a second.
“The Senate can empower the President in times of war to be an absolute leader, and the President can dissolve the Senate, but neither has not happened in at least a thousand years.” That was awfully simplified but It would have to do until I could get a file with more in data data to her.
“I have a file at hand with most of our Laws and more in detail government structures. I will sent it to you as soon as I am back at the ship.”i added.
“That would be much appreciated. Your question?” She asked.
“Well. I want to know more about your society, especially about the family structures.” I said hesitantly, looking for a way to ask what I would need to without embarrassing myself or the the Matriarch. She chuckled and her ears did a flurry of motions.”I see where this is going. Don't think I didn't notice the looks you had for your XO when talked first. Are you in love with her and want to make that official?”
Being caught I dropped my shoulders.”You got me. You see, human genders are more or less equal, we don't have the disparity in intelligence you have, so I have no real idea how a marriage or 'pair bonding' would work here. I ...” I was desperately seeking for words.
“I love her very much and want to marry her, but am frightened that I will do something wrong and force her to abandon me for doing something inappropriate.” I finally blurted out.
Xu'gnu scrutinized me for a moment, her face a mask of restraint. I was frozen in place, thinking I crossed some sort of taboo and she would now go on and put me in jail or worse. Then she stood up and moved over to me and hugged me.
“Did anyone tell you that despite being a fierce predator you are very cute when you are feeling insecure? I can see now why Ra'sha fell in love with you.” She said attempting to smile at me.
“And to answer your question we have families of usually between 1 and 6 men that are bonded by a vow of lifelong partnership to a single woman. I don't see why that wouldn't work with You and Ra'sha.” She sat back down and made a contemplating face.
“I'll be unusual that the man is initiating the bond.” she then continued. “Considering that our men are on average very meek and not that bright here is usual that the woman initiates the bonding. I get it that in your society the women are the weaker part?”
I was relieved that she took it so well. “Actually no. Our women and men are pretty much on par, we don't have your dichotomy between genders. But historically it is the man that initiates the pair bonding. And while some religions on Earth allow for a 'harem' of multiple women bonded to one man its usually just that: two people bonding for life. Its called 'marriage'.
She looked elated. “That's something we can work with. Its a long time since I had to do the preparations for one of my children but I would be honored to do it for you and Ra'sha.”
Another wave of relief rolled thru me. “I haven't asked her yet. You think she will agree?”
The Matriarch chuckled again. “The looks she shot back at you in our first call make me think that she is contemplating to ask you, but is not sure how it would work either. Don't fret, I can nearly guarantee you that she will say yes. She loves you as least as much as you love her from what I have seen.”
“And you, the Regent of a whole species with multiple worlds would really do us the honor to take care of necessary preparations and proceedings? Why?” I asked.
“The first 'marriage' as you call it between a new Species and one of our own? Why wouldn't I? That's rare even between Union folks although not unheard of. I would be glad to host that event.” She said.
Before it could open my mouth she added “AND I have seen you two together. While dealing with dangerous Attackers you still managed to unconiously show your love for each other. I am proud to have seen such a thing happen. You two will make a great pair.”
“You are taking a great load off my shoulders.” I said to Xu'gnu. “Now that we got that out of our way I am all game for anything you may ask me about my people.“
The Matriarch looked at her Guards. “When i get word that anything about that has left this room there will be consequences. I want this to be a surprise to Ra'sha. Understood?”
“Yes, ma'am!“ it came back as they saluted her.
We talked about society, differences and common traits for a good while. We were just eating a little lunch together when a guard came in, excused herself and whispered something into Xu'gnus ear.
“WHAT?” The Matriarch called out. Then she turned to me.”I just got word that Xi'par has been broken free from custody. That will be a problem soon. She will try to get revenge on you.”
Just as I wanted to reply my comms system pinged me. I tapped my ear and said “Yes, what is it, Valerie? Use my comms holo projector, I will keep no secrets with the matriarch.”
Dutifully the little blue fairy popped into existence between Xu'gnu and me. “Bad news, boss. I just lost contact with Ra'sha. She went onto the truck with Or'gnu and the goods to escort her home and called just seconds ago stating they have been attacked. What do we do now?'
I looked into Xu'gnus shocked eyes and switched context from 'pleasant talk' to 'war mode'. It must have shown in my body language because the Matriarch jerked back suddenly. “First: did we got the intel from Or'gnu?”
“Yes.” Valerie replied. “Alarm the Sergeant and her fellows, ask her if she is willing to do me a favor and issue them with combat suits and the recoil-reduced version of the carbines I made for my honor guard. Tell them to meet me in front of the ship and have a suit and full power carbine for me. I will be there as soon as I can!” I said.
Then, to the Matriarch:”I am sorry, we have to cut this short. Can you grant me temporary police rights? Don't get me wrong, I WILL go for her no matter what, but I would prefer if I didn't have to go thru your guards and police.”
The Matriarch nodded.”I can see that you would. I will order my police to support you. One thing: Please bring my daughter back alive.” She then turned to her guards.”You heard it. Get him to the ship as fast as possible!”
“I will do my best. Thank you for trusting me, Xu'gnu!” I said as I was turning around to run out of the room with the guards in tow.

2020.09.19 16:10 s810 Old Austin Tales: North Austin Meetups of Prehistoric Eras - (4000BC - 1690AD)

The folks down at the Austin History Center are slowly scanning archival photos and adding to UNT's Portal to Texas History even in these pandemic times. Among others, there are quite a few new photos of land parade floats from the early Austin Aqua Festivals in 1962 and 63. It's disappointing to see photos like this 1963 Austin Aqua Festival parade float ignorantly depicting Native Americans in a less than flattering light.
But a few of those kids dressed as stereotypical and generic 1960s natives probably had elderly relatives who remembered the time before all the tribes were ejected from this area and probably would have still thought of them as little more than savages. The photo gives context to the times in which it was taken. The Austinites of that era seem to have had less respect for those people who lived here hundreds or thousands of years before the Spanish and French started roaming around here.
As a modern Austinite I don't see why this attitude should be held up. Those were humans who lived here, if even sporadically, and loved the land and the creeks and trees as much or more than you or I. They just called the landmarks different names back then. It is known that some of the tribes who used to live around here were warlike and confrontational with other tribes. My own grandmother was born in Austin in the 1930s and often told me a tall tale about a fictional battle between the Comanche and 1000 Apache warriors in the hills near Lake Travis. (sometimes the battle took place in the area around where we were sitting in traffic depending on grandma's mood) It was a Thermopylae/Alamo-like tale of outnumbered Comanche braves winning the day by running to the hill now known as Commanche Peak and waiting in ambush. But grandma often told some whoppers and that was surely one of them. I've never read about even the scantest evidence that something like that took place here, if even only in oral histories of the tribes involved. But who knows. My point is we really don't know a whole lot about what the people who lived here before everything, and what they did while they were here.
Today I wanted to share some small bit of the real story of these people who lived here when real estate was free if you could keep it from the wild beasts or competing tribes. Because the real story, from what little we know of it, is really just as captivating as Grandma's tall tales were.
On a related note I recently discovered the AustinFound podcast from Michael Barnes and a few other folks at The Statesman. They've been writing the good historyposts on The Statesman's Austin360.com for a while now under the same name and I've referenced them a lot here before. Michael Barnes knows his stuff. He has written a multi-volume book set called Indelible Austin and was one of the people who went on the expedition to look for traces of the 1730 Spanish mission set up somewhere in this area. In episodes 1, 6, and 27 of the podcast he talks about the three main native tribes in this area: The Apache, who considered this area the northeastern border of their roaming grounds and had mostly vacated by the 1800s, the Comanche, who were descended from the Apache long ago and considered this area the southeastern border of their roaming grounds, and the Tonkawa tribe, who were also war like but had a different culture and their own ways. They especially were early victims of the diseases brought by european contact.
One thing I agree with Michael Barnes about is how The Tonkawa, despite having more of a territorial claim to the area Austin is in now than the other two tribes, are under-represented in the old chronicles written down by early white settlers. The Comanche are namedropped in the written accounts of the 1800s quite a bit for their 'depredations' on early settlers. It was the Comanche were the only tribe in this region who, for a time, rebuffed all attempts to subjugate them from Spain, Mexico, and Anglos. But the Tonkawa, on the other hand, being so few in number had to ally themselves with whites against the other two tribes. Because of this they were westernized quickly and assumed a sort of sub-caste in frontier society. Early accounts refer to them as 'Tonks' and talk in exaggerated ways about their cannibalism and wolf-worship. From what I understand the people eating only took place after winning a great battle. The tribe has a website nowadays where you can learn about their culture, their colorful traditional clothing and how it was made, and the Trail of Tears out of Central Texas.
It's not often talked about what tribes were here before the Tonkawa and the Comanche and Apache. It's a topic I'm always looking to learn more about. If you've lived here a while you might have heard of the Leanderthal Lady. Her remains are estimated to be between 10000 and 13000 years old and according to this article was found with buried with a shark tooth. I've also talked about the digs at the Westcave Preserve near Hamilton Pool, and the Levi and Smith Rock Shelters, where evidence of human habitation dates back 10000 years at least. But that brings up the question: Who lived in the area in between then and the time of the Tonkawa? I know there are stories from early settlers about an 'Indian Village' of an unnamed tribe very near the old Santa Monica Springs on the Colorado River but that's about it. Well thanks to some archeological digs over the years when new stuff had been built we know about a few frequent party spots some of the people alive back then liked to congregate in. I've found archeological reports from three separate digs in spots around North Austin, which is fine because the good rock shelters appear to have been in what is now South Austin anyway...
Let's start in the order the reports were made. The first concerns a site where people camped repeatedly over the course of the last 4000 years that today lies in a neighborhood near the intersection of North Lamar and Braker Lane. Back in the neighborhood is a street called Jetta Court. This neighborhood dates back to the mid to late 1960s and when built the area was already known for arrowhead deposits. In the 1980s further digs established the whole area around where Walnut Creek Park is today was once a major habitation area. But back in '68 the home builder company was partially done with the neighborhood and paid for a salvage dig after reports of trespassers "pothunting".
The report from the salvage dig was published in the Bulletin of the Texas Archeological Society, Volume 47, 1976 and is available in the UNT archive. You can read the whole thing if you feel like getting into the weeds. Quoting the abstract and introduction:
During the course of several weekends in 1968 and 1969, students from The University of Texas at Austin carried out test excavations at the Jetta Court site in Travis County, central Texas. These investigations constituted a salvage effort designed to obtain information on this site before it was destroyed by construction activities in a housing development. The terrace deposits at Jetta Court yielded a long Archaic sequence, including a deeply buried occupation which occurred stratigraphically below Early Archaic materials. The results of the excavations are described, and detailed analyses of the lithic debris and faunal re mains are presented.
The Jetta Court site (41 TV 151) is located within the city limits of Austin, Texas, buried in terrace deposits on the west side of Walnut Creek (Figs. 1-3). The site was brought to the attention of the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory (TARL) of The University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1968 by reports of pothunting in an area slated for a housing subdivision. Inspection of the site by TARL personnel indicated that it should be tested before the planned construction activities were begun.
Excavations, directed by graduate students in anthropology at The University of Texas at Austin, were carried out with volunteer help. Work was done on weekends during a period from December, 1968, to February, 1969. Since the site was unprotected during the week, numerous instances of vandalism occurred. One unit of excavation was eventually ruined, but the others were not seriously damaged. This combination of weekend excavation and weekday vandalism limited effective investigation to stratigraphic testing and backhoe trenching. Exposures of horizontal tracts were not done partly be- cause of fear that it would lead to more extensive depredations on the part of the pothunters, and partly because the site was considerably deeper than was anticipated.
The writers would like to acknowledge the assistance and under- standing of Mr. Cecil Lamour, representing Conann Construction, Inc., in permitting the excavations. His patience with our backhoe operations, in particular, was most helpful.
How dramatic. Apparently someone thought there was buried treasure nearby. I wonder what could have given them that idea.. Here's a photo of the site at the time and Here's a map of the dig site with the holes marked. All of this area is built over today.
The dig was done hastily and the vandalism limited the findings. The report goes on describe two burned rock midden sites located within the boundaries of the dig. These were like old campfires that had been repeatedly built over for a number of years during two different eras.
Some further highlights from the report:
Here's a photo of the one of the holes.
There are a couple of photos of some of the lithic projectile points found in the upper, newer rock midden. Here's one. Here's another. And a couple from the lower, older midden. Here's one from the lower and here's another. There are many more photos and charts showing the finds, their classifications, and their locations in relation to one another in the layered deposits. This is how most of the rest of the report goes.
There were many animal bones and shells found in some areas indicating people ate there, or used the site for industry. Here a list of animal species found in the bones they can identify. On the menu: snails, turtles, opossum, coyote, deer, bison, cow, a couple of kinds of rabbits and mice, and strangely gophers. Apparently there used to be gophers around here when the climate favored grasslands over forests.
The distribution of animal bones is nicely charted here in size and age, Category A being the largest animals like bison and Category C being the smallest, such as rats and snails. The report notes that remains of small animals would degrade faster so that might skew the results.
To sum it all up because it's way too long to copypaste, the two burned rock middens at Jetta Court don't contribute a whole lot of new information to the story besides offering evidence that the spot was a place for habitation. I think if I understand it correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) the lower midden dates back over 3000 years while the upper midden dates back about 2000 years. The report talks about not knowing how to classify the artifacts within the archaic period. It recommends further digs in the area but acknowledges that's probably not possible with the neighborhood going up. What the writers didn't know is that just a few years later digs would begin at many different sites in what is now Walnut Creek Park that further expanded the knowledge of that area and its earliest inhabitants.
Moving on to the next site, which lies a little bit east of there at what became the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm, once an actual farm near Sprinkle now turned into a live action museum exhibit by the city which is beloved by schoolkids on field trips. It turns out that when the farm was built in the 1850s, part of the property contained a much older camp site that was favored by natives a thousand years ago. A report was written in 1994 about a dig in 1983. (PDF warning). The site of the native cultural deposits was at the southern end of the farm. Here is a map of the site in relation to the farm.
The PDF isn't as copypaste friendly as the other UNT article but it's short and I can summarize the findings. It's really more of just an abstract compared to the other long report. It's worth taking the time to read if you can handle PDFs and you're interested in the history of the area at all. In the introduction they describe how the farm was bought by the Heritage Society of Austin in the 1950s and belonged to the City of Austin by 1980 as part of the same deal that established Walnut Creek Park. More than a few digs had been done in the area around there in the early 1980s. It describes 22 different ancient burials found at one nearby site. At the farm site itself there was a deposit of projectile points over a meter thick of most types found in the area during the archaic era.
That brings us to the third site. called Millican Bench. Never heard of it? Me neither. It's a tiny spot just south of The Arboretum today that was obliterated by the construction of Loop 360 in the 1970s. Before the highway cut through the site, TxDot conducted a dig in 1970 and 71 on a small limestone plateau (thus the bench) where artifacts had been reported by the previous landowner. The report on the site dig is another PDF, but it was written in 2003, is very detailed, and will let me copypaste from it. Here's a map of the site showing where it was in the roadbed of modern Loop 360.
Quoting from the introduction:
Located in Travis County, the Millican Bench site(41TV163) was the first archeological site excavated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT; then Texas Highway Department) as a mitigation effort for highway construction under the requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act of 1966. The excavation was conducted between September of 1970 and February of 1971under the direction of Frank Weir, then of the Texas Highway Department. In August of 2002, TxDOT contracted with the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (Work Authorization#57014PD004) to conduct an inventory and assessment of the archeological collections and documentation associated with site 41TV163, develop possible research questions that could be pursued with the site data, and to prepare the project material for permanent curation. Based on that assessment(Mahoney et al. 2003a), and following consultation with TxDOT, CAR further was directed to produce a final report. This document constitutes the final report on the TxDOT work at 41TV163. Included in this report are a description of the site, excavation procedures, and an analysis of selected components of the data collected over three decades ago.
To report on excavations and analyze data collected over30 years ago presents several challenges. Foremost among these is that if one wishes to avoid a primarily historical perspective, data collected using earlier field methods to investigate earlier theoretical concerns must be molded to address current questions. In this case, the disconnect between the theoretical and methodological considerations that guided the excavation of 41TV163, which appear to have been focused on chronology and cultural history, and current research interests in Texas archeology is exacerbated by the loss of a large portion of the field notes, some photo logs, and some of the artifacts and samples during the intervening years. Nevertheless, in the assessment document (Mahoney et al. 2003a), we identified a series of current research issues that could be addressed using data generated by the work at 41TV163. These include investigating temporal changes in subsistence patterns and changes in lithic technology. In addition, we investigate several aspects of site use during the Late Prehistoric occupation of 41TV163.
So what this is saying is that basically the original field work and notes were lost and they had to reconstruct everything. I guess they thought it was worth it in scientific value to reconstruct or else maybe because it was the forerunner to TxDot's first dig. In any case the findings showed evidence of habitation a bit later than the other sites to the east. The intro continues:
Initially, seven discrete areas, designated A through G, were identified at Millican Bench. Figure 1-2 (the map linked earlier) presents a section of an aerial photo with the sketched locations of these seven areas, along with the Loop 360 center line. The photo appears to have been created at the time of the fieldwork. Area A consisted of a burned rock midden located on a topographic bench. Another probable burned rock midden, Area B, was situated on the slope and creek terrace below the bench.Located just to the west of Area B were two other areas, designated C and D. These appeared to be occupation areas with burned rock and other debris present. Three additional areas, designated E, F, and G, were located across the creek east of Areas A–D. Area E was a burned rock midden that measured approximately four meters in diameter. Area F contained a concentration of occupation refuse with burned rock and chipped stone, while Area G was a broad bedrock exposure containing scattered chipped stone debris. With the exception of Area G, where only surface collection was conducted, all areas (A through F) had some level of excavation. At 41TV163, TxDOT personnel recorded 11features, including a human burial (Feature 10) and a possible structure (Feature 3). In addition, more than 200cores, 1,400 tools, 400 projectile points, and 42,500 pieces of debitage were collected. With the exception of any evidence for Paleo-indian occupation, the 41TV163 materials seem to reflect most prehistoric periods. Collected projectile point types thought to be diagnostic include Wells, Early Split Stem, Early Triangular, Martindale, and Uvalde forms dating to much of the Early Archaic (8000–6000 BP); Nolan,Travis, and a single Andice point, all dating to the Middle Archaic (6000–4000 BP); Bulverde, Pedernales, Williams,Lange, Marshall, Montell, Castroville, Ensor, Frio, Fairland, and Darl forms dating throughout the Late Archaic (4000–1250 BP); and Scallorn points, dating to the early portion of the Late Prehistoric (1250–700 BP). A small amount of historic and/or modern material was also collected, though it is not considered in any detail in this report.
Long story short, this area was frequently visited about 700-1500AD, and shows different patterns in habitation indicating the different tribal customs in use at that point. In addition to rock middens and lots of projectile points and rock flakes, an ancient human burial was found. Also many animal bones like the other sites indicating different eating areas.
Well there you have a few stories of the people who lived here before recorded history. I hope one day more local history writers and bloggers can address this topic in more depth than I have time for here today. I know there are a lot of people out there like me who would love to know more. Time is way short so I've got to wrap this up quick. I obviously don't have any related photos from prehistory but have some newly added old Aqua Fest photos from the UNT archive for Bonus Pics today.
Bonus Pic #1 - "Photograph of two people on a mini pool at the Aqua Festival Land Parade event" - August 3, 1962
Bonus Pic #2 - "Photograph of group of people at Aqua Fest event" - 1963
Bonus Pic #3 - "Photograph of the scenery at Aqua Fest event. A child is seen seated wearing a cape and crown. " - 1963

2020.09.19 15:15 emcro I made a free app to maximize points and cash back on all of your cards and help you track monthly + annual credits called CardPointers, and Apple is featuring it in the App Store with the iOS 14 launch!

Hi all, I'm the indie developer who's been working on the CardPointers app which launched last Spring here on CreditCards and have been cranking out update after update over the last 1.5 years thanks to your amazing feedback. I just released a huge 2.0 release with the iOS 14 launch on Wednesday, and I'm over the moon that Apple has featured the app in 6 different feature lists in the App Store, bringing a huge amount of new users into the credit card world which we know and love.
If you're not using the app yet, it works by adding the names of the cards that you already have (no bank logins or anything like that, your banking data is yours, and should never belong to anyone else), then the app will automatically tell you which card to use across 16 different purchase categories, let you know when you have recurring monthly/annual statement credits to use (and you can check them off once you've used them), and has all of the important details about your cards' features in one place, with an in-app universal search so you'll always remember which card has that special 10x promotion on Disney+ purchases this month (hi, CSR!)
Here are just some of the new features in the totally redesigned 2.0 release:
I've got a number of features I had hoped to make it into the 2.0 release which I had to cut, such as the ability to add the same card multiple times and a few others, and I know how important they are for other Redditors and they'll be coming up in the next point update.
And if you're on Android, you can get most of the benefits of the app as well using the PWA version which you can install directly on to your device's home screen by tapping on the Web App link. I'll be working on adding more of the new features above to this version this Fall.
I'd love to hear what you think of all of the changes and the new look, and as always, if you have more ideas on how to keep improving the app, I want to hear them, as my goal is to make the best app possible for this community and make the credit card game even easier for all of us.

Thank you again for all of the support in the last year, it means a ton, and thank you as well to the mods for pre-approving this post to ensure that we keep this subreddit awesome.

2020.09.19 08:24 unbe-leap-able Umm - what have I done?

So, I have been lurking and scheming in this sub for about 1.5 years. 6 weeks ago, my wife told me that she didn't want a full sized keyboard anymore and that she wanted a smaller one and a numpad. Asked me to look for something for her ("because you are into keyboards and stuff"). She didn't know how big of a mistake that was. I don't actually know if it was permission to get started spending money in this hobby, but I took it that way
Here I am now, six weeks later - I've built my own custom board (Box jades with dz60 and brass plate in tofu. I bought these keycaps - SA pulse - off /mechmarket but I have decided they are not right for this build so I have also bought SA blood/shadow too). I've built my wife a custom board (SA nuclear data and Gazzew's u4 bobas, and don't judge - the case is still being manufactured) and put it together.
I didn't make it into the group buy, so I have 4 more green discipline PCBs sitting here waiting for the right moment to be built.
I have lube and switch separators and 65 piece driver kit that is really nice, but way too much money, lol. I have multiple different types of wire snips and a 14 piece tweezer kit. I have hundreds of switches (bobas, box jades, box navies, T1s, halo clears (they haven't arrived yet), - I have glorious pandas coming at some point and red pandas too), and I just received some nice new cables today. I am in the group buy for kat mizu and kat cyberspace and I am actively looking for any mt3 set to buy and try out. I bought durock stabilizers from china and a sparkfun avr pocket programmer to program the chip in my wife's new keyboard. I bought case foam and silicone sheets to experiment with sound dampening. I bought some proton c's and magnet wire and thousands of diodes to experiment with custom layouts and handwiring. I also have about one thousand m2 screws of varying lengths and standoffs and washers and o rings now since my local hardware store had none I have to be self sufficient. I also bought key pullers and switch pullers and wire strippers and a nice caliper set just in case I need to measure something. I have 4 60% CF plates coming and I also made it into the group buy for the KeyBee Stripe 60% case. Lastly I bought into the Protozoa P.02 group buy and am anxiously awaiting that.
As you can see I have spent multiple thousands of US dollars (help me, I just can't stop).
When I delivered my wife's awesome silent keyboard, she asked me how much I spent. I replied, "How much did 'that' keyboard cost, or how much have I spent on keyboards?" She said "yes"? I lowered my head and said over $1000. She ask "How much over a thousand?" I responded a bit. She agreed to leave it at that and loves her keyboard.
I am in so much trouble, but I have been having so much fun! I love this hobby, but if you didn't notice, I still haven't built her original request - a numpad... lol. I guess I need to head over to aliExpress :)

2020.09.19 07:08 str8gangsta Trying to learn basic web scraping...

Hi! I'm totally new to scripting, and I'm trying to understand it a little bit better by goofing around with some stuff. I just wanted make a script that could open a webpage on my browser, interact with it, and take data from it. The example I thought of was going into a blog and saving all the posts. It seems like the workflow would be "open browser -> check on the HTML or the buttons and fields on the page if there's more pages -> open post, copy, save -> keep going until no more posts". I have no clue how to interact with HTML from the shell though, nor really where to start looking into it. I'd love just a point in the correct direction. It seems that you'll probably need to interact with multiple programming languages too - like reading HTML or maybe parsing JS? So does that mean multiple files?
So far all I've figured out is that
start chrome "google.com"
will open Chrome to Google.
I appreciate it! Let me know if there's a better sub for this, I'm new around here.

2020.09.19 06:42 TheESTest Kickstarter Success Findings

Hi Reddit, I'm the founder of a startup planning to offer its first product for pre-order on Kickstarter in a couple of weeks. I've backed campaigns on Kickstarter before, but I've never launched one myself, so I've been hunting around for tips and tricks on how to achieve successful Kickstarter funding, and I wanted to share my findings with the community. I figure this may help others who are in the same situation, or who are planning to use this approach for launching a product in the future. If you have any other tips or experiences to share, I'd love to hear them so I can incorporate them into my own project. Thanks guys.
I've linked some sources below. I didn't make or write any of them, and I'm not being compensated for linking them, but if these kinds of links are not allowed, I'll remove them. Mods, let me know if there's an issue.

Tips:
Statistics and Machine Learning Data
I've found a couple of articles that applied machine learning to try to identify the Kickstarter factors which most greatly affect the success of a product. Here are the takeaways:
  1. Don't set your funding goal too high. It seems obvious - if your funding goal is high, you're less likely to meet your goal. The best strategy appears to be: set your funding goal to just barely above what you need for your project to succeed. To do this, you need to have a solid understanding of the full cost of both producing and providing (i.e. fulfilling) your product to backers, and you need to choose your profit margin carefully. Personally, my company will be proceeding with a minimum 2.5 X COGS (cost of goods sold) strategy for setting the product's price in the market. I got this advice from a video from EEVBlog's channel on YouTube, linked below.
  2. Keep your campaign duration limited to around 30 days. The longer drawn out campaigns tend to fail more often because there it conveys to potential backers a reduced sense of urgency in achieving funding.
  3. Offer a lot of different reward tiers at different price points, perhaps 8-10 of them. This reminds me of the "foot in the door" sales tactic, where a low-priced product or service is offered along with a more expensive one. This makes the lower price seem more reasonable by comparison.
  4. Provide frequent updates to your backers as the campaign progresses. This seems like a correlation rather than a cause for success. A creator who cares about the success of the project will probably be more engaged with his/her backers than a creator who doesn't care.
  5. There is a correlation between the success of a project and its launch month during the year. Project failures increase around November and December, which I guess makes sense because of the holidays as people would rather not spend more of their money than they already have. Or, maybe they ARE willing to spend their money, but they know that their Kickstarter rewards won't arrive in time for the holidays. It turns out that best month of the year to launch is around March, with a slowly-declining success rate which tanks around November-December. Ideally, I would have launched my own Kickstarter earlier in the year because of this. C'est la vie.

Recently Successful Projects
The most recent successful projects on Kickstarter sometimes have similar features which I wanted to list here.
  1. Include a lot of pictures. I assume doing so conveys that a lot of effort and work has been put into the project. I would personally be more likely to back a project that has a lot of pictures rather than a project which has just just a few pictures.
  2. Show an actual photograph of your prototype, not just a 3D rendering or a sketch. I see quite a few proposed phone apps on Kickstarter which give no indication of how the product will actually work. I think most people can see through this lack of effort, because these types of projects sometimes fail to attract even $1, which is actually kind of hilarious.
  3. Some more successful (i.e. more money raised) projects use crowdfunding promotional services like Jellop or BackerCamp. Some of these services charge a fee in exchange for helping you with marketing via Facebook or Google. Other services act like a club, where backers and project creators can sign up to the club for a fee. The project creators get to list their project in the club's database, and the club member get an extra perk from the project, provided by the creator, if they back the project. I'm not sure what kinds of perks are offered on BackerClub because I'd need to sign up for it, but on a similar site, Bakkoo, a few projects offered perks such as "a free gift," or "early adopter pricing despite that reward tier being sold out." I'm on the fence about using one of these services; I might try to just handle marketing on Facebook, Pinterest, etc. myself, because it looks straightfoward to do so. On Facebook, for example, you make a company page/group, and there is a big blue Promote button which lets you set both your daily budget for ads as well as your target audience of Facebook users by age group, industry, their interests, etc.

Pre-Launch Preparedness:
More than one article online says that you should already have a following before launching your Kickstarter. (Duh.) That sounds like the ideal situation, but if you don't have any previous Kickstarter projects or haven't been engaged in building up your following over XXX number of months, this doesn't help very much. I figured I would include it in this list, even though it seems obvious.

So, there are my findings to date. If anyone has any other insights into promoting a Kickstarter campaign, it would help me greatly if you shared it. If anybody has any questions about my own imperfect approach to all this, feel free to ask. Thanks for reading.

2020.09.19 06:31 xCarlos_ 1000g Crysis remaster number 3rd worldwide & number 2 for the whole series 🥰

https://twitter.com/CarlosGoW_/status/1307171336566059011
I 1000g Crysis remaster today! Gosh I had a lot of annoying stuff happen though. My controller kept disconnecting (I need a new one) & I Had some wierd bugs happen. Pressing RB to cloak was barely working half the time for me because I need new controller but I still managed with it.
And half way through delta playthrough I noticed the achievements weren't unlocking so I had deleted my save data in restart the playthrough again to get them to pop. It still has some of the annoying bugs that were in the 360 version its like all they cared about was just remastering the graphics and not fixing some of the annoying bugs
I love Crysis :3333
Feel free to ask me any questions you have! I will be glad to answer! :) I wanna know how all of y'all are enjoying the remaster!

2020.09.19 04:19 fcatthepanerabread A week in your favorite firearm dealer's not-so erotic life *or* FC's tale of two grandmas! 9/18/2020

Friday 9/11/2020 to Friday 9/18/2020
I won't do the play by play. It's more fun to just amalgamate the highlight reel of the week.
Emails!
Subject: Sig P226
Message: Will trade for RAS-47?
FC: Sure. What do you propose?
I have a century arms RAS47 that has 30 total rounds through it. Magpul furnishing blk on blk.
FC: Right, you told me that earlier. Shipped or picked up? What value do you put on your trade?
Meet in person I’m in Lafayette. Value 900-1000.
FC: Okay, so I'm supposed to give you asking price for what reason? I have to resell that gun, so I'm supposed to buy it from you for $900 and sell it again for $800?
I was looking for a straight trade so you’d only have to sell it for what your asking for the Sig, or more if you're good at your job. AK's are definitely a hotter demand item right now. I’d prefer if you could text me (number)
(Editors note: FC does not text. Only drug dealers do business via text message.)
FC: Let me get this right. You want a straight trade so I only have to sell it for what I'm asking for the Sig. I have to do the work of selling two guns so I can make the same money?
You can sell an AK for more then the Sig in the current market. I’m just stating how easy it is for you to break even worse case scenario.
FC: There's a lot of gun guys in the breaking even business. I'm not one of them. Plus, if it's so easy to sell an AK, why don't you sell it and bring me cash?
It’s a trade so your only selling one anyways. Plus all will sell a lot faster... I’m not a dealer I don’t have people walking in looking for guns. Whatever easy sale and flip for ya but your loss bud
FC: Selling an Sig 9mm plus selling an AK is two guns. You must have gotten that common core math. I'll tell you what. You think it will sell fast? Bring it over here and leave it with me. I'll tag it and put it out at $1200 and when it sells, I'll have a 226 ready for you.
(No response)
Subject: Sig P220 on Gunbroker
Message: your ad says $1200 with CCL. arkansas ccl is reciprical with louisiana will you honor that?
FC: Picking up in person? No. Reciprocal for carry not for anything else like NICS exemption.
are you a federal firearms dealer ?
FC: No I am not.
(Editors note: I'm a manufacturer)
if i can l can legally hold own and carry any firearm concealed on my body or in my vehicle , then the rest is just cash exchange between to citizens , i can legally have own and carry the p938 , there is nothing not legal , we cN do a orivate bill of sale photograph my dl and ccl incase soneonencommits a crime , i can have a truck full of guns all legal, i just have to do the background check again to be able to pick up at an ffl , nit requred to register or anything like that
(Editors note: I delete the message)
Subject: Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS $775
Message: Is that price for real?
FC: No, that's wrong. I'll fix it right now.
(I change it to $875 on the website)
LOL o shit he raised it another $100, sorry man that petty ass shit doesn’t bother me. Honestly it just makes u look like a fucking joke. You’re the problem with dealers, it’s hard to find glocks this month so let’s jack the price up $300 and try to rob someone that doesn’t know shit about guns. Adam Kennedy FF/PM (name of his fire department and department phone number, sent from his department email)
(I google his name and email. He's got a low serial number HK Mark 23 for sale for top dollar.)
FC: I sold 10 at the gun shows for top dollar, this is my last one. Nobody's getting stock. If you want a $625-650 gun, I've got plenty of those but Glocks are selling for top dollar and then some right now. For instance, if you had a low serial number Mark 23 with everything that nobody could get - wouldn't you want top dollar for it too?
I had a mk23 preban with original woodland operators bag, and original Wilcox attachments (well all but the IR) and I put it on the forums. I let people out bid themselves not post it for an absurd amount/hundreds above MSRP just because they are hard to find. The point is I’ve been in guns since around 2012, met some really genuine people and what sets that site apart is people seem to have a mutual respect for each other. I understand that you have a business and have to make a profit but if you can’t separate the two and not price gouge the absolute fuck out of very common items just because you feel you can. Then maybe that site isn’t the best place for you, 95% of the people on that site are individuals and when a business comes along and does that it’s a slap in the face.
FC: So, you accept that you want top dollar because your merchandise is hard to find and are willing to accept the fact that the harder something is to find - the more people are willing to pay for it. You do it, and it's okay. I do it and I'm trying to rob someone? That's called moving the goalposts where I come from. Like it or don't like it, check gunbroker and all the other dealers - everyone's getting top dollar. I just did a show last week where I was $975 on Gen 5 19's, $775 on 43X's and $700+ on all gen 3 guns. The dealer across the aisle from me had Gen 5 34's at $1000. We're in business to make money, and people are willing to pay these prices because they're so hard to find.
How do I accept that?? When I sold the mk23 I posted it for a set very fair price, people offered me more because they wanted it. And top dollar would be MSRP or close to, top dollar is NOT hundreds above MSRP. Let me ask you this, does Glock charge you more (the dealer) because they are selling a shit load of them and they are “hard to find??” Does what you pay for glocks as a FFL change as drastically as the prices you are charging based off the market?
FC: You wanted, and got as much money for your rare hard to find product as you could? That's called getting top dollar! The new ford bronco is going to sell for above MSRP. For THOUSANDS more. are you going to call Ford and complain about that? Of course not.H Hundreds above MSRP is what guns are selling for right now. If you had some for sale, are you telling me you'd sell them for hundreds less than you could? I have not gotten a wholesale gun in stock in months, I have been buying guns at retail to resell. Glock does not set prices and distributors have nothing to sell me - so your question is entirely ridiculous. Do you remember the last time around 7 or 8 years ago when Colt 6920's were $2500 and SCAR 17's were $5000? That was nowhere near MSRP and I didn't hear anyone complaining. Since you don't seem to like it at all, I suggest you leave public sector employment and try to run a business and pay the bills with no product coming in wholesale.
(Editors note: FC used to be a public servant. FC used to work in the fire department. FC knows that you can get in deep shit for sending profanity laced emails on city email account with email signature. I forward the email to his department chief with a polite message tactfully reminding him that all emails sent to a city email are preserved as public records.)
Subject: Noveske lower
Message: Would you be willing to do a one for one trade? I have a NIB Anderson lower. I’m specifically looking for one of a few specific brands of lower and Noveske happens to be one.
FC: So I'm supposed to trade you even up and sell an anderson for more money? BTW. CTD got lowers back in this morning. They're andersons and they want $199 for them but I don't think I'm going to be able to get that price.

Phone calls!
A: Guy wants a folding bracestock. I ask him if he wants a brace or a stock. He does not know the difference. I ask him if he's building an SBR. He says he's building an SBR, specifically an SBA3. I die a little inside.
B: Guy calls looking for 100 rds of 38 special for his colt python. Drives up in his tesla and hands me a ritz calrton titanium black card. $75/100 okay? No problem. He asks if I have any more at that price. I tell him as much as he wants.
C: Endless calls for 9mm and 380 ammo.
D: Guy calls me asking for a Glock 43X. He comes in and looks. I tell him $775 as he's holding an Amex. I say I'll do better for cash. $775 out the door. He says deal. Comes back the next week with $575 cash and I look at him funny. I paid $550 for the gun retail but he owns the Chickfila 20 miles up the road and gives me a stack of be our guest chicken sandwich coupons. I begrudgingly accept.
E: Lady calls me she's headed to the range in a few hours. She needs 500 rds of 40S&W and some 380.
Me: I got it. 500 rounds of 40 - $350
1: $350?
Me: $350.
1: No, no no!
Me: Yes, yes, yes.
1: It can't be $350! That's $350! That just can't be!
Me: Welcome to 2020
1: Well the 380 ammo is cheaper right?
Me: Not really. You're looking at $65 a box.
1: No, no no!
Me: Nobody's got ammo right now and we're getting top dollar. That's the price, feel free to shop around.
She never calls me back.
F: Guy calls me asking about my Federal 115gr 9mm. Cheapest on Ammoseek is $57 a box. I don't want to be that high so I price it at $55/box. He says how much for the case. I tell him 55 times 20. He's bad at math so I tell him that's $1100 for it all. He calls me an asshole. I tell him everyone's asking me to get 9mm ammo so I'm buying it retail and marking it up. He tells me not to buy it at retail and hangs up on me.
G: The gun club president calls me. the club needs a new 5.56 upper. I ask why. Someone shot 300 blackout through the old one and destroyed it. I tell them I don't have any uppers. I have complete rifles. Cheapest is $900 for an S&W sport M&P. I can hear his jaw dropping.
There's other miscellany but you get the gist of it.
NOW here's the meat and potatoes you've wanted! The tale of the gun show!
Friday 9/11/2020
I take inventory. I'm down to about 350 guns in stock and I pack as much as I can and get it ready for the show. I've got some Sigs left, a handful of Glock and a mishmash of everything else. I head to bed early knowing full well the next show will be a good one. I bought a bunch of Glock 43X's retail.
Saturday 9/12/2020
I pull chocks at 615AM. This show is about an hour down the road from my house, the last time I was there I sold nothing all weekend, broke my oakleys and vowed never to return.
This time is gonna be different, I said to myself.
At 7AM I walk in and I start loading into the show. It's a small venue in the middle of MAGA country. Everyone wearing red hats and trump train shirts.
In a few hours the doors will open and we are off to the races. I will do hour blocks instead of my previous play by play for simplicity.
9AM: Slow start, the show is spread out across TWO buildings so they route people into the other side and it takes them about 30 minutes to make their way into the big room. First sale of the day is my last Sig 365. For $700. It takes an hour and a half to get his background check back.
10AM: Guy points at an FNS 40C and wants a deal. I make him a deal at $525 cash out the door. He says he'll come back and think about it a bit.
I sell a shield for $500.
I sell a Glock 43X for $775.
I sell a Glock 43 for $700.
For some reason everyone is calling me Daniel. It takes me an hour to realize it's because I'm wearing a gray Daniel Defense polo.
11AM: FNS40 guy is back. He says it's a deal. I hand him a clipboard. he hands me an already filled out 4473 like another dealer rejected his sale. It's folded over on the long side and I tell him to fill out my form in front of me.
10 minutes later he hands me the pre filled out folded form thinking that I'm stupid.
You gotta be shitting me. I park his ass in a chair hand him a pen and tell him to start writing.
He fills it out. I enter in his background check and it does not come back right away. He gets antsy.
12PM: FNS 40 guy wants his money back. I refund it and keep $100 for me. I grab my tablet and someone has swiped right on my bumble. We begin chatting and I ask her if she wants to go to dinner. She's a little older, in her 40's and works for a bank. What the hell, why not.
Someone asks me what it takes to suppress his beretta 92. I tell him he needs a threaded barrel. They run $250. Someone overhears me and brings by his S&W 5906 and expects me to get a threaded barrel for $250.
Guy asks me to bring the threaded barrel tomorrow. I say sure.
1PM: Lady comes by and asks me if I have any 5.7's. She's on the phone reading down my inventory. I ask her if the gun is for her or her friend. She says for her. I show her the 5.7 on the table and roll my eyes a bit.
2PM: 5.7 lady comes by with her butch lesbian lover. She tells me its a deal and I hand her the clipboard. She fills everything out with lots of errors. I get her background check in and I tell her $1375
Her jaw drops. She was looking at the FNS 9mm for $575 next to it and didn't think that 5.7 pistols were $1375. She coughs reeking of weed. I void the sale.
Guy walks up asking me for 70% silencers. I just laugh.
3PM: Another guy comes over asking me if I got a 5.7. I tell him yes. He says he's got $1000 right now for a 5.7. I tell him I'll take $1000 as a down payment. He laughs and is adamant that I take this $1000 for a 5.7 tagged at $1375.
I ask him if he's got cash and all his ID and everything. He's on the phone it's actually for a friend of his. I ask him if his friend can get here before the show closes at 5. His friend has no CWL so his wife has to buy it but he's going to pay for it.
This guy is barking up the wrong tree. I go back and help someone else. He's looking at a Springfield XD I've brought and asks me if I'm making any deals. I tell him we're not doing a lot of discounting at the show. He shrugs and says he tried.
Another guy asks me for a Glock 43X. I walk him over to the stack and show him the tag at $775. He scoffs at me and walks away.
4PM: Show starts slowing down. I write up a Sig P238 Tribal and a P938 BRG for some customers at $700 each. I write up a S&W M&P15 sport for $900 as my last sale of the day. The lady was super nice and understanding when I pointed out the errors on her 4473.
5PM: Time to go home! I dump off some transfers to another dealer and hit the road. It's an hour to get back home.
6PM: I take a shower, shave and get to the restaurant for dinner.
7PM: I'm at the restaurant waiting at the table and I discover that the woman that said she was in her 40's is actually a 58 year old grandma of 2. Someone shoot me. She says she's not that hungry and proceeds to order soup, salad, a martini, an espresso and dessert. She's ordered $65 in F&B to my $35 steak. This was a complete waste of an evening.
My depression worsens and not even a bowl of mint chocolate chip can break me out of this funk. My will to live is eroding by the minute. I fall asleep at midnight and set my alarm for 747AM. I make a mental note to move up my therapist.
Sunday August 16th
747AM. Wake up, take a swig of orange juice and run down to the deli and grab a sandwich and get down to the show. I grab a threaded barrel for a Beretta 92 on my way down. Note: The guy never shows up for that barre.
10AM: Get to the show and uncover my tables and get cranking. It's a slow start to the day. My first sale is a Springfield XD. The show goes on and I write up an FNS for someone. The customer writes the check out payable to HK NO COMPROMISE.
I look at them confused.
FC: Why is this check made out to HK?
1: That's what it says on your shirt, HK NO COMPROMISE - that's the name of your company, right?
FC: sigh
11AM: Guy wants a can without a tax stamp. 5
12PM: Someone walks over. Points at my stack of silencers
1: I can't pick one of those up here!
FC: You got two arms don't you?
1: I mean I can't buy one here!
FC: If you got money you can buy one!
1: You're a real smartass you know that!
FC: Beats being a dumbass!
The peanut gallery laughs at our exchange.
1PM: Guy wants to buy a Walther P22. Fills out the front sheet of the 4473. Satisfied with his answer, he turns the page along the perforation, rips it off and proudly hands the top sheet to me.
I die a little bit inside.
2PM: 7 different husband/wife combos ask me for shield EZ pistols. I write up my last M&P 15 sport I brought to the show for $900. It's a good day! I debated bringing another but I figured selling two for the weekend would be plenty.
3PM: The lady that bought that S&W M&P15 yesterday? She wants another one. I have three left on the shelf. I take her money and tell her I'll meet her at the show next week and she says no problem and does all her paperwork. u/throwawayfire343 's coronavirus infected ass shows up and needles me on a gun.
1: How much do you want for this $150 gun?
FC: About 350
1: really
FC: Gimme $200 and fill the goddamn form right
1: deal!
I take his money and wrap up a few other folks and get ready to pack up and head home. He does the form right much to my chagrin.
4PM: Show is closed. I start packing up. I snag 500 rds of 9mm off the dealer across the show. He started with a full pallet. Most of it is gone. Price? $500/thousand. I am packed up and on the road in a little under an hour.
5PM: Homeward bound........I wish I was........HOMEWARD BOUND..............
I hit the truck stop for some diesel and a cold fountain drink.
630PM: I get back to my desk and dump off a fucking STACK of 4473's. I make a bank drop for the cash and I unload and head back home. I'm starving, I go grocery shopping and grab some comestibles. I cook myself dinner and head home.
Monday September 14th
10AM: My back is out and my depression is worse than ever. I don't know what hurts more, my back or my brain. I head in and get my 4473's worked on from the show.
11AM: Guy asks me to get some 9mm ammo for him held until after work. No problem. He says he'll be here at 445 after he gets out off at 430. He works around the corner.
12PM: Lunchtime. It's Chicken Bacon Ranch day at the market. I'm starving. I grab my keys and get ready to leave when I get a call from a lady from the gun club. She wants one of my last Sig 938's. I tell her to come by, I'll delay lunch for her.
1PM: Laura shows up and spends 45 minutes with me trying to decide on which 938 she wants. She has no intention of shooting this gun she just wants one in case antifa shows up. She leaves and says she will come back in 45 minutes. Great, I can go to lunch now.
2PM: It try to go to lunch. I am not successful. Laura calls me asking me more questions and tells me she has another friend wanting the same gun. I tell her I will put my lunch on hold and she can come on by.
She and her friend debate Sig 938's for a while and each of them buy a gun. I got a twofer! Woo! This calls for a celebration called lunch.
3PM: I get a call from a semi regular. This guy buys a gun or two a year. He's getting his concealed license and does not want the government to know he's buying guns. So he's sending his wife in to do the 4473 for his birthday present, a Wilson CQB 1911 they've purchased off gunbroker. I tell him great, send her over and I'll get her paperwork done. I get ready to go to lunch. The phone rings, Laura and her friend want more of my time. Fine. I will put my lunch on hold. Come on over.
4PM: Laura and her friend come over and Laura suggests that I give each of them a few Sig 938 7 rd pinky extension mags for free since they just bought two guns. I look at them in great pain.
Women. They make the highs higher and the lows more frequent. I'm sorta in a woman hating mood after this week but I don't want to take it out on them. I explain politely that NOBODY is getting free goods right now. if you want mags, I have three left. They spent 25 minutes arguing with me and then they decide to buy all three mags. Great. Terrific. I'm going to lunch now. Your business is appreciated now GTFO. The guy that wanted me to reserve 9mm ammo for him? Yeah he no showed.
5PM: Beef jerky lunch time. I get my keys and get ready to walk out the door. The wife of Wilson Combat buyer is running errands and can be over here. Sure, come on down. I'll be here. She does all her paperwork and we talk for 2 hours about how autistic you all say I am and how not autistic she says I am. Nice lady. She brought me gummy bears. I tell her I am clearly on the spectrum because I behave and think exactly like her autistic son. She fails to believe me.
7PM: I can finally go have lunch! I go to the Olive Garden for lunch.
815PM: I get home from the OG. This is not going well. My colon does not like the pasta and breadsticks. I spend the next hour and a half making three trips to the throne. This fucking week. And it's only sunday. God damn.
I take a tylenol PM and sleep it off.
Tuesday September 15th
10AM: I get in and start catching up on vendor calls and paperwork.
11AM: UPS rolls in with a wilson and some piece of shit suppressor from some company. I call Lisa and tell her that the package is here and she can pick it up anytime. She says she will be right over.
12PM: Lisa gets her gun and thanks me with some things she got at walgreens. Red hots, and pens. I laugh. I tell her it's fine. She's confused. Her autistic son always liked Red Hots and pens.
1PM: I swing over to the deli and it's Monday. They have hot browns today. I love a hot brown. I grab one and check in on facebook telling the world of my discovery. So many great job poopin memes and comments ensue.
2PM: I call the guy who's got the el cheapo 556 can. He's pissed. That can was supposed to be sent to another dealer across town. I tell him his options.
A: I can do his form 4 and charge him my hourly.
B: I can ship it back to the vendor and charge him my hourly.
C: I can ship it to the dealer across town and charge him my hourly.
He's PISSED and tells me to do the forms for him. I tell him email me all the info and I'll get it done. I get an email in GMAIL CONFIDENTIAL MODE.
What's CONFIDENTIAL MODE? It's a self destructing email you can't reply to, forward or cut and paste from - which makes this useless since I have to cut and paste all the info he's given me. I tell him I need the data in a different format. He yells at me about PII and stuff and I offer to do the form 4 in front of him. He relents and emails me what I need. It's missing a birthday. No biggie. I email him a draft and he says it looks lfine.
3PM: The guy comes by and he's pissed at the vendor and takes it out on me. I tell him if he does not want to do the forms from me, I can send it to the dealer across town. He's mad as hell and I've discounted my rate to $100 as a goodwill gesture.
1: You're charging me $100?
FC: Yes
1: But you're not doing anything.
FC: Here's the checklist.
1: The other place did my photos, fingerprints and everything and charged me $100.
FC: Great. I'm not spending $8000 on a fingerprint scanner to make it back $100 at a time.
1: So you're not doing anything.
FC: I did these forms correctly as you asked.
1: But you didn't even do my fingerprints! Or my passport photos! What the hell am I paying you for?
FC: Why'd they send the item here/
1: Hell if I know! You should call them and find out!
FC: You want me to call them?
1: Well you dealers have a special phone number and email. They won't answer my calls or my emails.
FC: What makes you think they're going to answer mine?
1: You're a dealer! You have a special back office phone number to reach them that I don't have, right?
FC: Are you kidding me?
1: No! You all have that special communication system that the public has no access to!
FC: Gimme your $100 and get these forms reviewed, I've got another customer to help in a bit.
1: You mean I gotta mail it out too! The other place did that for me!
FC: You want me to mail it? I'll mail it. Get the prints done, get the photos taken and get the form filled out and I'll mail it.
1: The other place answered all the questions for me!
FC: I. DON'T. CARE.
1: I am really upset about all this you're charging me the same money and you're doing no work!
FC: You want this can?
1: Yeah
FC: Then follow my instructions.
He pulls out three credit cards with damaged magnetic stripes that won't work. I manually key the card and I'm now working for $96.50 dealing with the biggest pain in the ass I've seen since operation machinegun salvage in 2019.
4PM: I have to go to fedex to drop off today's orders. 1000 rds of 22 leave the building for $189.48. A bunch of mags to the west coast and a Sig P220 are leaving.
5PM: Make it to Fedex where I say hi to Cathy and the gang. I swing by the market on the way home and grab some shredded romaine and a thin cut top sirloin.
545PM: Now I told you this story was a tale of TWO grandmas. Here's the second. I get a call from my attorney buddy Eddie, my partner at the consulting company. He got a call from a lady needing help with some ATF Forms. He knew it wasn't his area of expertise and wanted to know if I could do it. I said send the details my way. He tells me it's an older lady and to expect an email. Moments later I get an email from him.
Subject: Forms for Karen Witherspoon
Message: Will, attached is ATF correspondence from ATF to Karen, I think you can fix this. Thanks!
I look at the attachment.
NOTICE OF TAKING DEPOSITION DUCES TECUM - State of Louisiana vs Billy Bob Ray Thibodeaux
FC: Eddie, I got your deposition notice not the ATF forms
Eddie: Whoops
FC: If that's the worst thing that happens this week it's not a bad week.
Eddie: She knows you're charging her I didn't give her a price.
FC: Lemme look at it and see what we got.
6PM: I call Karen and ask her some details. Her husband was a former licensee/SOT and left a machinegun behind when he died. She did ATF Form 5 and got some errors and needs help fixing it. Just as I'm on the phone with her Eddie emails me the packet.
It's bad and riddled with errors. Out of 20 fields that all need to be filled out correctly, 12 are wrong. And not a little wrong. A LOT wrong.
I won't get into it here but I might in a separate post.
ATF wants the forms back at their facility in 30 days. The mailing date was 2 weeks ago. Which means these forms need to be corrected RIGHT THE FUCK NOW and sent out. Oh and she's got no fingerprint cards.
I tell her that I can drop everything I'm doing this evening, go over everything with a fine tooth comb and have this done in a few hours and I can drop them off tomorrow. She says if I can make a house call that would be good since she has furniture movers coming to empty their house in the morning. I tell her no problem. $350 and I'll see her tomorrow.
I run down all the forms and fix everything. I do a public records search and pull court filings for the probate and print them off and enclose them as ATF requested.
$350 for basically an hour's worth of work isn't bad. There's a steak/bottle of wine split for Eddie in there since it was his lead.
8PM: I call Karen back and tell her I've got everything done but ATF needs a copy of the will. She says she has it. I got everything else they asked off the clerk's website. She's super impressed. I tell her there's a reason Eddie called me.
9PM: Time to cook dinner. My phone is about to die. Just as I plug it in I get a call from u/fat_italian_stallion
He NEVER calls me unless something's up.
We had a quick chat over the weekend at the gun show that went something like this
FC: So that's how I got catfished by a grandma on bumble
FIS: LOL that is epic bad. I'm in New Orleans for a week on vacation with the gf
FC: The psycho one?
FIS: You know it.
FC: If you need bail money let me know
FIS: I just might!
That was Sunday morning. It's tuesday night. My phone dies as I try talking to him. I switch to my landline and call him.
FC: What up?
FIS: I need a solid
FC: How bad is it this time?
FIS: Can I sleep at your house tonight? She went nuts again and attacked me.
FC: I told you not to get invovled with her didn't I?
FIS: She's hot!
FC: You know I'm like 3 hours away from you right?
FIS: Yeah I got a half tank of gas.
FC: Go fill it, here's the address. See you around midnight. You hungry?
FIS: Starving.
FC: I was getting ready to fix dinner. I'll see you at midnight. Get here when you get here.
9PM-1145PM: I fix up the guest suite and prepare dinner. I run to the Target near my house since they close at 10 and grab a few more things. I get back just before 10 and I prepare to fire up the grill and get a steak going, salad and a fresh ravioli dish drowned in Rao's tomato basil sauce is on the menu. Steak hits the fire at 1130 and is resting by 1145. I plate everything and have it on the table at midnight.
1145PM: I get some spare towels and hotel soaps and shampoos. I head out to the driveway and turn on all my lights and leave the garage door open. I set a lawn chair up and crack open a large bag of boom chicka pop poprcorn and await the arrival of one u/fat_italian_stallion
1204AM: u/fat_italian_stallion rolls up. I've got guns and roses "Used to love her" playing on the ipad
FC: sup?
FIS: Long day.
FC: Dinner's on the table. Lets eat.
Wednesday September 16th
We eat and go to sleep. fat_italian_stallion does not know I have slid my spare ipad into the guest suite on the nightstand.
Did you know you can set an alarm on an ipad to instead of making a noise to play a song?
757AM: The ipad alarm wakes up fat_italian_stallion. The song? A little band called Confederate Railroad blasting "I like my women a little on the trashy side." He'll have to tell you the rest of the story.
9AM: I chat with fat italian and we chat a bit skipping breakfast. He has decided to leave this godforsaken state and put some miles between him and the psycho. I don't blame him one bit.
10AM: Breakfast! I throw on a charcoal canali and hit the chickfila drive thru for some breakfast chicken biscuits. I head to my desk and get some paperwork and some calls done.
11AM: I get a call from my attorney buddy Sam. He wants to know how many laws his client who has sent in a Form 1 and not notified the CLEO has broken. I explain I was just having that debate with someone on the internet! It's not a big deal but still kinda a big deal. Our consensus is that it's not count one on the indictment but it could be count five or six.
12PM: Lunchtime. I'm not hungry so I skip lunch. I head to meet with the grandma with the MG and I go over all her new forms that she needs to get fixed with fingeprint cards and my notes. She's super appreciative and gives me $350 in cash. She can't find the will. I call her attorney that I know and he's not picking up. I tell her see if she can get an original copy of the will from the clerks office or from the attorneys office, they normally have a copy.
I ask her what plans she has for the gun. I mean, what's a grandma supposed to do with a registered Colt M16?
All her husbands friends wanted it and they all offered her the same amount so she didn't need it and decided to sell it. She's taking the $5000 she's getting and going on an Alaskan cruise with the grandkids after the world calms down. I shrug. She should have called me.
2PM: Back at my desk, I call the judge's chambers that's doing the probate. Judge Smith LOVES the 308 that I got him a few years ago and is super pleased with my services since he didn't tell the wife about his purchase and I had just gotten a damaged case of 308 PMC Bronze that I made him a hell of a deal on that UPS wrote off. I tell the JA that ATF probably isn't going to call but in case they do just be ready. She's super glad that I told her ahead of time so she can be ready.
Judge Smith is retiring in a few months and he's got some time in the schedule so she patches me through and we catch up for a little bit. I am told that they're going to try to do a COVID compliant socially distanced retirement disrobing party but it's all up in the air. I say if you all need someone to bring potato salad to let me know. As a stalwart of the legal community for many years, lots of folks know the judge so it's well deserved after 20+ years on the bench. As I am also well known in the legal communty the least I can do is show up with a bottle of red for the guy that's signed hundreds of form 4's for me over the years.
3PM: I ship out a few more pistols and sell an M1A scout squad to a guy in California. Not a bad day.
4PM: I'm done for this week. Between the gun show and getting catfished and everything I've earned some time off. I think I'm gonna take the rest of the week off. The phone rings and a guy wants some 9mm ammo. I sell him 500 rds at $375 plus shipping.
Thursday September 17th to Friday September 18th: I wrote this for you all to read.
PS - and this is how you do a "week in the life" thread, you fucking imposter. https://www.reddit.com/guns/comments/i759qj/a_week_in_the_life_of_your_favorite_firearm/

2020.09.19 02:36 bandalorian Learn drone programming?

I have been doing some computer vision stuff with drone footage obtained from youtube, and I now would like to start capturing my own video. However, I know nothing about drones - but my hope is to be able to program a drone to fly from point A to point B, take 1 min of video (top down, hovering) and then return and land. Where should I start? Something like this course? Initially I just want to get it to execute this in the simplest way I can, so if there is some high level API or similar that would be great. I found Tellopy, but I need to be able to take top down video, which I don't thinkn the DJI Tello can do? Like I said, just don't know where to start so any help is appreciated! For context I work with a lot of AWS on the data side of things, and am familiar with alexa so would love to connect a command like "ask my drone to fly to the other end of the backyard".

2020.09.19 02:22 Miceland This sub is everything that is dumb about the internet and i love it

We all know it's true: NBA is a cesspool of hot takes and copypastas. It's also, by far, the best sports sub on reddit.
It produces more internet culture and jokes than almost any other sub, but it's also honestly just full of great content.
This is a hilarious idea with amazing follow-through. If you write something this good, you will get high engagement. If you want to read data-driven analysis about Harden's love of strip clubs, you have to come here.
This is a brilliant bit that I still laugh about sometimes. If you write a great joke, you will get high engagement.
I will take any of the big, messy, meme-filled main subs over the self-important "I'm not going to prom because I think it's stupid" fake-serious-discussion groups. politicaldiscussion isn't actually for the most serious political thinkers. Do you think Noam Chomsky is joining "the serious thinkers club"?
Every "serious discussion ONLY" sub is just a way for people who are tired of having to compete with jokes to jack each other off for their banal, low-engagement takes. They are splinter groups, selecting for people without a sense of humor, like Wahhabism. seriousEwing, where only the most doctrinaire Patrick Ewing posters go, is more or less an ISIS cell.
Look, NBA is stupid. But it's much less stupid than thinking you're smarter than everyone else

2020.09.18 21:41 Wareve Star Trek games you can get right now

Hi everyone, my last post about wanting to see more star trek games got a lot of comments (if not a lot of Karma) and so I thought you might be interested in what Star Trek games are around right now.
Edit: Please feel free to add your own, or add links to games with mods (though please include the link to the mod as well if you can) that convert them into Star Trek games! I only limited this to official star trek games in the hopes that maybe people might buy them, and thus produce sales data that might make CBS see that there's a good monetary incentive to make more games available.
First off, the original Starfleet Command is a great game that still holds up, even if it's graphics look like they're rendered in cardboard. You can install it, go to skirmish, and make yourself a 9 on 9 fleet battle between any of the TOS factions they included. I just went three rounds in a half hour and it's honestly probably, pound for pound, the best currently downloadable Star Trek game available. Go watch the Battle of the Binary Stars and set yourself up a round, it's real fun I promise!
https://www.gog.com/game/star_trek_starfleet_command_gold_edition
Next up, Star Trek Bridge Crew. Looks really cool and fun, but I lack a VR headset and playing without one was, for me at least, basically impossible. I imagine it's better with friends and with the appropriate equipment, but unless you've already got those it's kind of hard to justify buying it.
https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/7939/Star_Trek_Bridge_Crew__Bundle_Game_and_The_Next_Generation/
Star Trek Online has been around for a while, and you likely already know it. It's an MMO on the decline and I haven't personally played the expansions, but there is plenty of trek themed content around a serviceable MMO that once upon a time admirably carried the burden of being our only way to play past the end of Voyager in the prime timeline. And hey, some of the stories are cool! (It's great for people who love buying lootboxes!)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/9900/Star_Trek_Online/
Star Trek Starfleet Academy is a flight sim that has footage of the original trek actors, and is well reviewed, though I couldn't tell you how it is personally. Might pick it up on sale, but if I'm being honest, probably not.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/364810/Star_Trek_Starfleet_Academy/
I don't really count Star Trek Timelines, because it's basically a fancy UI over a random number generator phone game, but it exists, technically, so here.https://store.steampowered.com/app/600750/Star_Trek_Timelines/
Also, for the sake of completeness, there are some adventure games (that seem neat but I'm not buying for $10 a pop)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/364800/Star_Trek_Judgment_Rites/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/359650/Star_Trek__25th_Anniversary/
And, unless you wanna go trolling around for an old physical copy of Elite Force or The Fallen somewhere, that's it!
...
...
Unless of course you consider piracy as an option to get games no longer being sold, in which ca-*transmission lost*

Post Body:

First of all, I am from exjw (Ex-Jehovah’s Witness). I find it awesome that you guys use the term “PIMO” as well! I have a few questions:
1)I work with more than a few Adventist’s and find them all to be the sweetest people. They are very understanding and seriously so sweet. As a Jehovah’s Witness, we have a phrase called “put on the new personality.” Is this something you also practice? Is this also a conversion tactic, Or just how you were raised based off of the examples at church?
2) What made you leave?
For my context, as an ex-Jehovah’s Witness, I can think of at least 10 reasons I left my religion (multiple false “end of the world” prophecies/timeline, disfellowshipping/shunning punishment arrangement, not allowed to research your own religion outside of the religion, pedophile anti-reporting policies, no blood transfusions/risking life because of it, lack of tolerance for lgbt or any outsiders, extreme demand of time, high-control religion (clothing, activities), bible doesn’t make sense, 8 guys control the church ideas and change them whenever they want, the list goes on and on)
3) What do you believe now?
4) Do you miss anything about the religion?
Edit: for those who don’t know, “PIMO” means “Physically in, Mentally out”, those who no longer believe but are too scared to lose their entire network of friends/family, so they fake it. We use it in the exJW community. There’s also “POMO” for those who are openly out of the religion, either by force or by choice, and “PIMI” used to describe those who are still fully in.
Thank you all for your replies!!

  1. Friendship evangelism is pushed hard, at least in my experience. Fake niceness towards outsiders is encouraged - it’s amplified if that outsider is an important person. Everyone’s a bit fake-nice at church.
  2. Funnily enough while studying theology my love for exegesis was my undoing (reading whichever bible book in context, trying to understand the author’s intent, relevant historical & social data, linguistic data, etc). Exegesis, specifically with non-SDA scholarly sources, exposed a lot of flaws in my prior SDA fundamentalism and helped me to see that a lot of what was coming from SDA church propaganda, the pulpit, and sugar-sweet devotionals is nonsense if one is to take the bible exegetically. I quickly began to despise devotional readings of the bible and fundamentalist proof-texting.
Basically all the “big SDA proofs” which had been preached at me for decades crumbled upon closer exegetical examination (this set of SDA proofs also included many of the general “Christian/biblical proofs.”
Plus prayer never worked and that always bothered me. It always seemed like god had an easy out whenever you really needed him to actually turn up or affect reality as promised. The “relationship with god” was also completely one-sided, which isn’t really a relationship.
EGW’s influence was also very un-fun and wet-blankety. I’m so glad to be free of her authority.
  1. I’m an amorphous agnostic apostate I guess. I lean atheist - based on the reality I perceive I don’t think there’s a benevolent god behind it - but I leave the option open. Perhaps a trickster god or a demiurge-type god would be more in line with reality.
  2. Maybe the sense of security and the sense of ultimate closure (coupled with death avoidance). These factors don’t make up for the incredible neurotic anxiety, guilt etc.

Welcome to the sub!
1) From personal experience, I find a lot of Adventists can be very fake. I did grow up around some genuinely good people in my church, but so many of the big-wigs were completely different underneath the facade, be it from fear or biblical obligation.
2) Like at least one other commenter said, I also had a traumatic experience with my mom that really got the ball rolling on me being PIMO. I’ve told this story on the sub before, but essentially we were being badly abused by my dad. We finally were able to physically separate ourselves from him and move somewhere else safe, and when my mom went to the church elders/pastor for guidance in filing for divorce, they told her she didn’t have grounds for divorce because he hadn’t cheated on my mom with another woman; because that was the only biblical ground for divorce. Essentially condemning my mom to die for the sake of keeping god happy. I never spoke to any of those people again due to the betrayal I felt. I did attend a different church when I moved to another city with an ex, because he was still in. But as soon as we broke up over 5 years ago, I never again attended, even casually. It was the most free I’ve ever felt.
To add on though, aside from the bad experience with leadership, I found the whole church doctrine to be complete bullshit the more I looked at it. So controlling and legalistic, and full of holes that nobody would dare address.
I still can’t believe JW’s are against blood transfusions. I dated a JW guy in high school who was excommunicated during our relationship and it was a huge deal to his family. His mom was inconsolable because her son was going to hell. Just yikes, dude.
3) I honestly haven’t fully labeled my current beliefs, because I don’t really care to. I definitely lean more towards atheism since I find it baffling to think there’s a powerful sky being who has the ability to help, yet actively chooses to not save its creations and let them perish en masse. Even if there does turn out to be a god, gimme eternal damnation, cuz I don’t wanna sing praises to that asshole in perpetuity.
4) Strangely enough, I miss potluck. My family had the young adult sabbath school group over to our house every Saturday and my mom and I would cook and have these amazing vegan meals (actually good ones because my mom is an incredible cook) and just lounge around with people I loved. Then Saturday nights we would get a group and go bowling or do another social activity with everybody. It was great socialization. As an adult now, it’s hard to find a cohesive group in that way since everyone has conflicting schedules and lives.
None of that is worth being in the church for, though.

Hi there! I love exSDA - exJW solidarity. From what I read on here, the term PIMO was coined by someone in the exJW community, but I might be wrong. Either way I personally am very grateful for it.
  1. Indeed most Adventists you will meet as a nonSDA will seem very nice people. In my experience, Adventists are eager to maintain this "kind Christian" exterior in order to make a good impression. Reputation and exterior matters more to them than reality. For a lot of them it matters that people outside the church distinguish them from other cults by their niceness and selflessness. Many people in my church bragged about how they brought so many to Adventism just by being nice and helpful, because the people in question thought "wow they are so different". Of course, this isn't to say that most of them aren't actually good, but growing up in this church and seeing how they can really be, has made me wary of those first impressions. However, no, we don't have the new personality rule, the tendency to act nicely is most likely just ingrained in the church mentality.
  2. 90% of your reasons for leaving are mine too. Continuous end-of-the-world fear mongering despite multiple false prophecies has made me stop taking anything about Adventism seriously. The encouragement of blind faith. Bigotry and high control, like clothing, lifestyle, activities, everything in your life has to revolve around church and Adventism. The members' fakeness and passive-aggressiveness, and the mask they put on to seem happy and put together, because everything had to be a competition in the church. And also the obsession with (racist) Ellen White's prophecies and writings, and how she is put above the Bible most of the time. An overall unsettling and uncomfortable experience.
  3. I don't have any religious beliefs now. I'm still trying to unlearn some of the most venomous and traumatizing stuff that was ingrained in me since birth. I don't see myself ever reverting to a state of blind faith for another religion. I don't know if I'm an atheist or anything. I haven't had the energy or desire to look into anything else, I'm still processing my existence outside of SDA. I probably am agnostic, by definition, but I don't really know. When I was in high school I used to call myself an apatheist, it's a term for when you don't care whether God exists or not. Now I don't feel the need to call myself anything, I'm just trying to feel normal.
  4. Nothing at all. I thought I would miss the few friends I had in the church, but I really don't. Most of the things I would think about as positive and worthy of being missed have very little to do with the church/religion and more to do with being an innocent kid. I'm talking like summer camps, games, singing with other kids, learning about nature, etc. Once I hit high school and became more familiar with the doctrine and teachings, I started feeling cold towards the church itself. So now no, can't say I miss anything.

Good Christians can be sweet, it doesn't have anything to do with how correct their doctrine is. It should be obvious that real Christianity is about a relationship and not about 'right believing' or 'right knowing'. Plenty of wonderful Mormons and non-Christians too.
I wouldn't say I left, I would say that I now identify primarily as Christian and not as Adventist. I am still happy to attend many Adventist churches just as I am happy to attend many Lutheran or Assembly of God or Presbyterian or Methodist churches.
I have met some wonderful Witnesses but have never attended a Jehovah Witness church.
Obviously I am (still) a Christian.
I think Adventists do Sabbath School (for young kids) better than most denominations.

At least when chatting with most of them I see a notable difference. Very easy to talk with. Maybe it’s because we have similar upbringings and similar deep seeded anxiety-ties, or just used to love bombing from church. I can see a few being very grumpy and judge mental, even thinking that I am judging them for something they did wrong (like admitting they secretly drink coffee every day and that’s SO bad! Please don’t tell so-and-so!). I’m glad you chose to leave for your kids. That sabbath thing sounds awful. JWs actually claim to debunk the Sabbath teaching. I guess it’s all on interpretation, which the whole bible is up for interpretation in a million wacky ways, which makes it harder and harder to believe in the first place.

2020.09.18 20:24 DataGOGO Husband opposed to Breast Reduction

Hey there, throw away due to personal information.
I first would like to thank you for taking the time to read my post. My wife is strongly considering a reduction (She REALLY wants one); I strongly oppose her decision, and would like some feedback from you all.
My primary concerns relate directly the potential risks as they specifically relate to my wife and her health issues.
First some context and to set the stage. I know SO's being in opposition to reductions are a touchy subject around here, so I want to get this out in the open. My wife is my world. Seriously. She is my best friend, my partner in everything, she is incredibly smart, passionate, and as a nurse she has dedicated her life to the care of others. I love and respect her. She is an amazing person, and I am beyond grateful to she has chosen to share her life with me. We have been married for a decade, and we have a really good marriage and relationship. She really does mean literally everything to me.
So here we go. My wife has a chronic illness that causes persistent pain, chronic fatigue, that she has REALLY been struggling with the past few years, to the point that it has a direct negative impact on her life, she had to change jobs, and doing anything literally wipes her out. Sweeping the floor will put her on the couch for the rest of the day. She suffers badly with all whole body pain, aches, and thus far, no doctor has been able to figure out what exactly is going on; other than one doctor who believes she has fibromyalgia. Her pain is so bad that she has even been talking about going on long term disability.
She also has potential of a growing cancer of unknown origin as indicated by abnormal blood work (discovered while trying to determine what is wrong with her); After days of testing, they couldn't identify the location or identify a cancer, but the oncologist told us the only sources of the malformed antibodies they found in her blood (multiple test with increasing counts over time) are malignant. They do not believe that she is currently immunocompromised, and she is currently on a check up every 6 months (waiting for the results of her first 6 month check up now, this is very new and we don't know where or how fast it is going to go).
For her last major medical condition, she has a known physical neck/back disk injuries w/ spinal compression. In fact upon discovery via imaging, she was referred to a pain management doctor and a spinal surgeon, an appointment that will take place next week.
So medically, she has a lot going on.
Being a data scientist by trade, I immediately poured over data sources, peer reviewed medical studies, chart reviews in breaking down risks and results, which just reinforced my concerns.
Physically speaking, She is a very tiny woman at 5'3, 130lb, and under 40 years old. According to the studies, while she is in the group of people least likely to suffer a serious complication, she is also in the group to have the least benefits from a breast reduction. Even when adjusted down for her risk group by age and BMI (without taking medical issues into account) studies indicate she has a 1 in 33 chance of serious enough complication to require additional surgery, and this surgery represents a 1933% greater chance of serious complication (Grade II+) vs. a gall bladder removal surgery. (yes, that data is correct); add that to her health issues...
All that said....
This is very important to her, she was wanted a breast reduction most of her life, for both medical and cosmetic reasons (again, not judging, she is really tiny, with big boobs, I fully get why she feels the way she does.). Her body her choice, and after all, they are only boobs. I am doing my best to addresses my concerns, find a way to fully support her, and I want to be excited for her as she brings me along, seeing her get something she wants so badly; but I am having a really hard time doing so.
I fully admit that literally all year we have been in a constant flow of deep concern, unbelievable anxiety, hospitals, scans, test, cancer, doctors, pandemics, illness, and it is just really stacking up. It was only a few months ago that we were sitting on the couch crying and talking starting to make plans (what kind of urn she wanted etc.) about what she wanted if she died of (what the thought at the time) an aggressive cancer, and we still just don't have any answers as to what is going on with her medically in terms of her chronic illness, her spinal issues, or the source of her abnormal blood test results and cancer. I am aware of the possibility that all of the mental and emotional fatigue is certainly contributing to my severe anxiety of her having a voluntary major surgery and my strong objection to her going though with it. I just cannot shake that the belief that, for her specifically, this is a big risk that out weighs the potential benefits, and with everything else that is going on, candidly, I am so worried about this that I am literally shaking just typing this post.
I am so torn. On one hand I want happiness for her, I want her to have that excitement and joy of getting something she has wanted for so long; and she certainly deserves all the joy the world has to offer; On the other, every part of my soul is screaming at the top of my lungs that for her this just isn't worth the risks and I am terrified, especially given the additional risk of chronically ill person contracting covid (I am also very high risk in terms of Covid) while trying to recover from such an invasive surgery. After fighting so hard trying to get her well and keep her in this world, it feels wrong to do this now. I am really struggling and thus far I just can't find a way to support her on this one.
So ladies (and men) of /reduction , help me out here, Am I nuts? Is she?

2020.09.18 19:57 gabedamien USB problems with Dell U3419W (audio static, webcam freeze, m/k stutters)

TL;DR: when laptop is connected to monitor via short USB-C cable, or long cable + separate power, USB devices connected to monitor seem to work fine. But connecting laptop and monitor via long USB-C cable without separate laptop power causes monitor-connected USB peripherals to struggle.
Hello all. This will probably become a support ticket for Dell at some point, but I wanted to start by trying to understand what my problem even might be.

Context

I recently bought a Dell U3419W monitor (3440 x 1440), partly because I wanted its built-in KVM switch and USB-C support to simplify my desktop setup.
  • KVM switch would mean I can plug in my peripherals (mouse, keyboard, audio DAC/amp, webcam) to the monitor, and switching sources between desktop and laptop would mean I don't have to physically swap my peripherals.
  • USB-C support would mean I can plug my laptop in via a single cable for power delivery, video signal, and data.
You can see a diagram of my current setup here. In summarized text form:
  • Wall power (120V) + ethernet go to a CyberPower 1000PFCLCD UPS.
    • UPS power, ethernet, and USB2 (for battery status) go to a custom PC.
    • UPS powers monitor.
    • UPS powers DAC/AMP.
  • Custom PC connects to monitor via DisplayPort & USB3.
  • MacBook Pro 13" connects to monitor via USB-C.
  • Monitor is connected to downstream USB 2 devices:

Problems

  • Despite audio being digital (USB 2 cable to DAC/Amp), in certain situations the audio is full of almost analog-sounding static (clicks/fuzz) or fails to connect at all.
    • On PC, audio works fine, even with ~2m USB 3 upstream cable btw. PC and monitor.
    • On two different MBPs, audio has static when laptop is connected to monitor via 2m USB-C downstream cable. I tried three different brands of long cable: included Dell USB-C, Plugable 2m TB3, and CableMatters 2m USB-C. All are rated for 100W power delivery + high-bandwidth USB/video.
    • On the same MBPs, audio seems fine when the laptops are plugged into a separate charge cable before connecting to monitor via 2m USB-C.
    • On the same MBPs, audio seems fine when using a shorter 0.8m Plugable TB3 cable to monitor, even without separate charge cable. Unfortunately, this cable is too short for my desk configuration.
  • In certain situations, mouse and keyboard struggle.
    • Using an older custom PC Hackintosh, when booted into Mac OS, there was no problem; when booted into Windows 10 (with no change in physical cabling), mouse would occasionally freeze for a number of seconds, and keyboard would "stick" and repeat last pressed key until another key was pressed.
    • With new custom PC running Windows 10, there have been no m/k problems.
    • On laptop, with longer USB-C cable and no separate charger, the mouse sometimes takes a second to register movement at first. Both m/k then work fine for the duration of the wake session.
  • In certain situations, my webcam would lose connection / freeze / quit working.
    • When connected to monitor and using laptop via long USB-C.
    • Have not tested on PC or using short USB-C.

Debugging

  • Have tried swapping out multiple cables along each path, adding/removing ferrite cores to various cables, and moving cable paths around (in parallel, eliminating loops / mess, moving specific cables away from others). Only reliable cable differences I noted were that: (1) a short 0.8m plugable USB-C cable for the laptop seems to solve the audio problem, and (2) using separate charging for the laptop also seems to solve the audio problem, both as noted above.
  • Have tried removing wireless mouse dongle and turning mouse off. Doesn't eliminate static. However, it does seem like moving my mouse temporarily increases static; hard to say for sure (it's not a night and day difference, partly because the static is already heavy).
  • Have contacted Schiit to ask what they think might be going on. The rep speculated that there may be a ground loop or interference issue with the monitor, which could affect the amp portion. But I don't know if that makes sense given the USB-C cable differences noted above.

Speculation

At this point I'm somewhat confused as to what is the actual issue (or issues).
  • Schiit rep was guessing a power / ground loop issue might interfere with amp.
  • Shorter USB-C cable to laptop works, and long cables all don't work. The cables are all high-quality and different brands, so this makes me wonder if there is some kind of data signal under-power issue with USB from/to the monitor. But two different MBPs (slightly different model years, 2018/2019) both have the same issue. So maybe it's something to do with the monitor side?
  • The fact that it seems to work okay when plugging in the laptop charging before connecting to USB-C is also surprising to me. This suggests that there's something wonky happening when the monitor is trying to charge the laptop. I don't know if that would be an interference issue or else an issue with power to USB ports being reduced out of spec or what.
  • I thought maybe radio interference was the issue, and indeed, moving the mouse seemed to exacerbate it (I think), but turning off mouse and removing dongle didn't reduce the issue.

Ways Forward

  • One thing I have not tried is buying a separate powered USB hub to sit between peripherals and monitor. If the issue is power delivery, maybe that boost would fix the issue. But OTOH, there is no problem currently with the PC, and the problem also goes away with a shorter USB-C cable or separate charging to laptop. So that suggests to me that the issue does not lie between the peripherals and the monitor.
  • As I originally said, I probably will open a support ticket with Dell at some point. But as this post illustrates, my own understanding of what is going on right now is fuzzy, and I'd love to be able to narrow down / better understand the technical possibilities - so my support ticket is more direct / reproducible.
Any ideas? Is this a power supply issue, a signal protocol issue, a radio interference issue, all of the above, or what? Is this kind of sensitivity to cabling over such short distances (2m) expected/normal for USB-C? What should I do next?

2020.09.18 19:54 Brother_Moloch_969 List of Academic Resources for Pre-1800's Magic & Sorcery (Books, Websites, Blogs & Etc.)

Cross-posted from Magick.
Greetings. Several years ago, I along with some friends (Aaron Leitch, Jake Stratton-Kent, Frater Rufus Opus, and many others) contributed to a list we thought would be a great resource for studying Magic & Sorcery with academic elements listed prior to the 1800's new age movement. Here you will find a lot of useful information and realize this list is NOT complete because since the time we created this list, more academic material has emerged on the market. Also realize these books are not often found free on the Net in pdf form so you will have to do like the rest of us had to do which is purchase them - if you want them. I got many of these books in used condition from Amazon, AbeBooks, Half-Price Books, and so forth. Getting these materials & studying them will seriously up your magical game. Enjoy!
8o) Br Moloch 9.6.9.
Books:
  1. The Greek Magical Papyri in Translation: Including the Demotic Spells: Texts (Volume 1)” by Hans Dieter Betz - This is a collection of magical spells and formulas, hymns, and rituals from Greco-Roman Egypt, dating from the second century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. A must read.
  2. Curse Tablets and Binding Spells from the Ancient World” edited by John G. Gager - In the ancient Greco-Roman world, it was common practice to curse or bind an enemy or rival by writing an incantation on a tablet and dedicating it to a god or spirit. These curses or binding spells, commonly called defixiones were intended to bring other people under the power and control of those who commissioned them
  3. Magika Hiera: Ancient Greek Magic and Religion” edited by Christopher A. Faraone & Dirk Obbink - This collection challenges the tendency among scholars of ancient Greece to see magical and religious ritual as mutually exclusive and to ignore "magical" practices in Greek religion. The contributors survey specific bodies of archaeological, epigraphical, and papyrological evidence for magical practices in the Greek world, and, in each case, determine whether the traditional dichotomy between magic and religion helps in any way to conceptualize the objective features of the evidence examined.
  4. Arcana Mundi: Magic and the Occult in the Greek and Roman Worlds: A Collection of Ancient Texts” by Georg Luck - Magic, miracles, daemonology, divination, astrology, and alchemy were the arcana mundi, the "secrets of the universe," of the ancient Greeks and Romans. In this path-breaking collection of Greek and Roman writings on magic and the occult, Georg Luck provides a comprehensive sourcebook and introduction to magic as it was practiced by witches and sorcerers, magi and astrologers, in the Greek and Roman worlds.
  5. Greek and Roman Necromancy” by Daniel Ogden - In classical antiquity, there was much interest in necromancy--the consultation of the dead for divination. People could seek knowledge from the dead by sleeping on tombs, visiting oracles, and attempting to reanimate corpses and skulls. Ranging over many of the lands in which Greek and Roman civilizations flourished, including Egypt, from the Greek archaic period through the late Roman empire, this book is the first comprehensive survey of the subject ever published in any language.
  6. Forbidden Rites: A Necromancer's Manual of the Fifteenth Century” by Richard Kieckhefer - Like many medieval texts for the use of magicians, this handbook is a miscellany rather than a systematic treatise. It is exceptional, however, in the scope and variety of its contents—prayers and conjurations, rituals of sympathetic magic, procedures involving astral magic, a catalogue of spirits, lengthy ceremonies for consecrating a book of magic, and other materials.
  7. Ritual Magic” by Elizabeth M. Butler - In this classic book (first published in 1949), Butler explores ritual magic using a wide range of texts from the pre-Christian rites of the Akkadians and Chaldeans to the Solomonic Clavicles of medieval Europe. Throughout, there is extensive quotation from the documents themselves, providing the reader with an authentic sense of the richness and power of these texts.
  8. Conjuring Spirits: Texts and Traditions of Medieval Ritual Magic” edited by Claire Fanger - Included are chapters by Richard Kieckhefer and Robert Mathiesen on the Sworn Book of Honorius, Michael Camille on the Ars Notoria, John B. Friedman on the Secretum Philosophorum, Nicholas Watson on the McMaster text, and Elizabeth Wade on Lullian divination. The work also includes Juris Lidaka's edition of the Liber de Angelis, and an overview of late medieval English ritual manuscripts by Frank Klaassen.
  9. The Fortunes of Faust” by Elizabeth M. Butler - Butler follows the magic tradition of the Magus—the priest-king—and its reformulation in the Christian world. In the process, the Magus was transformed into a wicked sorcerer who comes to a bad end in this world and a worse one hereafter. This conception, which gained ground in the Middle Ages, received its most categorical statement in the Faust legend.
  10. The Goetia of Dr. Rudd” by David Rankine & Stephen Skinner - The Goetia of Dr. Rudd explains how the 72 angels of the Shemhamphorash are used to evoke and safely bind demons—material that has not been made available in any previous edition. This rare volume contains a transcription of a hitherto unpublished manuscript of the Lemegeton and includes illustrations drawn from rare manuscripts held in the British Library.
  11. The Complete Magician’s Tables” by Stephen Skinner - The sources of this remarkable compilation range from classic grimoires such as the Sworn Book to modern theories of prime numbers and atomic weights. Data from Peter de Abano, Abbott Trithemium, Albertus Magnus, Cornelius Agrippa, and other prominent scholars is referenced here, in addition to hidden gems found in unpublished medieval grimoires and Kabbalistic works.
  12. The Keys to the Gateway of Magic: Summoning the Solomonic Archangels and Demon Princes” by Stephen Skinner & David Rankine - This classic text of the Nine Great Keys details the invocation of the Archangels, the full hierarchy of spiritual beings (including Olympic Spirits and Elementals) and the evocation of the four Demon Princes
  13. Three Books of Occult Philosophy” by Henry Cornelius Agrippa & edited by Donald Tyson - How magicians collect virtues from the three-fold World, is declared in these three books. Seeing there is a three-fold World, Elementary, Celestial, and Intellectual, and every inferior is governed by its superior. Indispensable.
  14. The Complete Picatrix: The Occult Classic Of Astrological Magic Liber Atratus” translated by John Michael Greer & Christopher Warnock - The Picatrix is the most famous grimoire of astrological magic and one of the most important works of medieval and Renaissance magic. With all four books of the Latin Picatrix complete in one volume, the Picatrix is an encyclopedic work with over 300 pages of Hermetic magical philosophy, ritual, talismanic and natural magic.
  15. Secrets of the Magical Grimoires Revealed” by Aaron Leitch - The magickal methods and esoteric knowledge of medieval Europe (476 to 1453 C.E.) form the ancestral backbone of modern ceremonial magick. To understand medieval magick, it’s necessary to know the primary repositories of this knowledge - the grimoires of spells, incantations, and ritual instructions for working with angels and conjuring spirits. And to understand the grimoires, you must delve into the life and times of the magicians who wrote them.
  16. The True Grimoire” by Jake Kent-Stratton - The True Grimoire is a major contribution to the practice and study of Goetic magic. The neglected Grimorium Verum has been restored to it's rightful place as a potent and coherent system of Goetic magic. Jake Stratton-Kent has reconstructed a working version from the corrupted Italian and French versions of this important grimoire.
  17. Geosophia: The Argo of Magic” by Jake Stratton-Kent - Geosophia traces the development of magic from the Greeks to the grimoires, laying bare the chthonic roots of goetic ritual. By exposing the necromantic origins of much of modern magic we are able to reconnect with the source of our ritual tradition. There is a continuity of practice in the West which encompasses the pre-Olympian cults of Dionysus and Cybele, is found in the Greek Magical Papyri and Picatrix and flows into the grimoires.
  18. "Ancient Christian Magic: Coptic Texts of Ritual Power" by Marvin W. Meyer & Richard Smith - This provocative collection of rites, spells, amulets, curses, and recipes of the early Coptic Christians documents Christianity as a living folk religion resembling other popular belief systems - something quite different from what theological and doctrinal traditions have led us to believe.
  19. Invoking Angels: Theurgic Ideas and Practices, Thirteenth to Sixteenth Centuries” edited by Claire Fanger - Bring0s together a tightly themed collection of essays on late medieval and early modern texts concerned with the role of angels in the cosmos, focusing on angelic rituals and spiritual cosmologies. Collectively, these essays tie medieval angel magic texts more clearly to medieval religion and to the better-known author-magicians of the early modern period.
  20. The Testament of Cyprian the Mage” by Jake Stratton-Kent - An ambitious and far-seeing work, addressing two ends of the magical spectrum: the Testament of Solomon and one version of the Iberian Book of Saint Cyprian. In doing so, key aspects of magical practice are revealed. This work draws upon these texts to create a clear understanding of the practice of grimoire magic, not as a discrete or degenerate subset of ceremonial magic, but one which is integrated with folk magic and witchcraft.
  21. Veritable Key of Solomon” by Stephen Skinner & David Rankine - Based on one of the best-known grimoires of the Western world, The Veritable Key of Solomon presents all aspects of this revered magical system in one impressive source.
  22. The Magical Treatise of Solomon, or Hygromanteia” by Ioannis Marathakis - The true source of the Key of Solomon, it is arguably the most significant magical text in the world. For the first time ever, this extraordinary work has been translated from the original Greek into English.
  23. Magic, Witchcraft and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman World: A Sourcebook” by Daniel Ogden - Contains three hundred texts in new translations, along with brief but explicit commentaries. Alongside descriptions of sorcerers, witches, and ghosts in the works of ancient writers, it reproduces curse tablets, spells from ancient magical recipe books, and inscriptions from magical amulets.
  24. Ancient Jewish Magic: A History” by Gideon Bohak - Gives a pioneering account of the broad history of ancient Jewish magic, from the Second Temple to the rabbinic period. It is based both on ancient magicians' own compositions and products in Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek, and on the descriptions and prescriptions of non-magicians, to reconstruct a historical picture that is as balanced and nuanced as possible.
  25. John Dee's Natural Philosophy: Between Science and Religion” by Nicholas Clulee - Thoroughly examining Dee’s natural philosophy, this book provides a balanced evaluation of his place, and the role of the occult, in sixteenth-century intellectual history. It brings together insights from a study of Dee’s writings, the available biographical material, and his sources as reflected in his extensive library and, more importantly, numerous surviving annotated volumes from it.
  26. Grimoires: A History of Magic Books” by Owen Davies - Put simply, grimoires are books of spells that were first recorded in the Ancient Middle East and which have developed and spread across much of the Western Hemisphere and beyond over the ensuing millennia. At their most benign, they contain charms and remedies for natural and supernatural ailments and advice on contacting spirits to help find treasures and protect from evil. But at their most sinister they provide instructions on how to manipulate people for corrupt purposes and, worst of all, to call up and make a pact with the Devil. Both types have proven remarkably resilient and adaptable and retain much of their relevance and fascination to this day.
  27. The Language of Demons and Angels: Cornelius Agrippa's Occult Philosophy” by Christopher I. Lehrich - The analysis walks the reader through the text of De Occulta Philosophia, Agrippa's 1533 masterpiece, explicating the often hidden structure and argument of the work.
  28. Thrice-Greatest Hermes; Studies in Hellenistic Theosophy and Gnosis” by G. R. S. Mead - Three Volumes bound into one. Volume contents are: Vol. 1. Prolegomena. -- Vol. 2. Sermons. -- Vol. 3. Excerpts and fragments.
  29. The Egyptian Hermes: A Historical Approach to the Late Pagan Mind” by Garth Fowden - Starting from the complex fusions and tensions that molded Graeco-Egyptian culture, and in particular Hermetism, during the centuries after Alexander, the author argues that the technical and philosophical Hermetica, apparently so different, might be seen as aspects of a single "way of Hermes".
  30. Restless Dead: Encounters between the Living and the Dead in Ancient Greece” by Sarah Illes Johnston - Topics of focus include the origin of the goes (the ritual practitioner who made interaction with the dead his specialty), the threat to the living presented by the ghosts of those who died dishonorably or prematurely, the development of Hecate into a mistress of ghosts and its connection to female rites of transition, and the complex nature of the Erinyes.
  31. Hekate Soteira: A Study of Hekate's Roles in the Chaldean Oracles and Related Literature” by Sarah Illes Johnston - Hekate is best known to classicists and historians of religion as the horrific patroness of witches. But from the Hellenistic age onward, some Greek and Roman philosophers and magicians portrayed her quite differently.
  32. Magic and Ritual in the Ancient World” edited by Paul Mirecki and Marvin Meyer.
  33. Marsilio Ficino: His Theology, His Philosophy, His Legacy” edited by V. Rees, Michael J. B. Allen & Valery Rees - This volume consists of 21 essays on Marsilio Ficino (1433-99), the great Florentine scholar, philosopher and priest who was the architect of Renaissance Platonism and whose long-lasting influence on philosophy, love and music theory, medicine and magic extended across Europe.
  34. Secrets of Nature: Astrology and Alchemy in Early Modern Europe” edited by William R. Newman & Anthony Grafton - Shows the many ways in which astrology and alchemy diverge as well as intersect. Overall, it shows how an appreciation of the role of the occult opens up new ways of understanding the past.
  35. Trithemius and Magical Theology: A Chapter in the Controversy over Occult Studies in Early Modern Europe” by Noel L. Brann - This is a very useful, exciting and informative text for those interested in the philosophy and theology behind Renaissance Magic. Mentor to Agrippa, pioneer of cryptography, Trithemius is one of the most important (and well-placed in Church history) yet difficult to understand of the great Renaissance writers on magic, and this book provides a detailed but readable introduction to his views on the subject.
  36. John Dee's Conversations with Angels” by Deborah E. Harkness - John Dee's angel conversations have been an enigmatic facet of Elizabethan England's most famous natural philosopher's life and work. Professor Harkness contextualizes Dee's angel conversations within the natural philosophical, religious and social contexts of his time. She argues that they represent a continuing development of John Dee's earlier concerns and interests. These conversations include discussions of the natural world, the practice of natural philosophy, and the apocalypse.
  37. John Dee's Occultism: Magical Exaltation Through Powerful Signs” by Gyorgy E. Szonyi - Presents an analysis of Renaissance occultism and its place in the chronology of European cultural history. Culling examples of "magical thinking" from classical, medieval, and Renaissance philosophers, Szonyi revisits the body of Dee's own scientific and spiritual writings as reflective sources of traditional mysticism.
  38. The Arch Conjuror of England: John Dee” by Glyn Parry - Explores Dee’s vast array of political, magical, and scientific writings and finds that they cast significant new light on policy struggles in the Elizabethan court, conservative attacks on magic, and Europe's religious wars. John Dee was more than just a fringe magus, Parry shows Dee was a major figure of the Reformation and Renaissance.
  39. The Eternal Hermes: From Greek God to Alchemical Magus” by Antoine Favre - Drawing upon rare books and manuscripts, this highly illustrated work explores the question of where Hermes Trismegistus came from how he came to be a patron of the esoteric traditions and how the figure of Hermes has remained lively and inspiring to our own day.
  40. Glamorous Sorcery: Magic and Literacy in the High Middle Ages” by David Rollo - Demonstrates how closely interconnected certain types of vernacular and Latin writing were in this period. Uncovered through a series of illuminating, incisive, and often surprising close readings, these connections give us a new, more complex appraisal of the relationship between literacy, social status, and political power in a time and place in which various languages competed for cultural sovereignty-at a critical juncture in the cultural history of the West.
  41. Unlocked Books: Manuscripts of Learned Magic in the Medieval Libraries of Central Europe” by Benedek Láng - During the Middle Ages, the Western world translated the incredible Arabic scientific corpus and imported it into Western culture: Arabic philosophy, optics, and physics, as well as alchemy, astrology, and talismanic magic. The line between the scientific and the magical was blurred. According to popular lore, magicians of the Middle Ages were trained in the art of magic in “magician schools” located in various metropolitan areas, such as Naples, Athens, and Toledo.
  42. The History of Magic and Experimental Science” by Lynn Thorndike.
  43. The Mechanics of Ancient Egyptian Magical Practice” by Robert K. Ritner - This study represents the first critical examination of "magical techniques," revealing their widespread appearance and pivotal significance for all Egyptian "religious" practices from the earliest periods through the Coptic era, influencing as well the Greco-Egyptian magical papyri.
  44. Eternal Egypt: Ancient Rituals for the Modern World” by Richard J. Reidy - The first comprehensive collection of important temple rituals performed throughout Egypt during the time of the pharaohs. The author presents seven key rites from official temple records and ancient esoteric texts for personal or group use.
  45. Arguing With Angels” by Egil Asprem - Examining this magical system from its Renaissance origins to present day occultism, Egil Asprem shows how the reception of Dee’s magic is replete with struggles to construct and negotiate authoritative interpretational frameworks for doing magic. Arguing with Angels offers a novel, nuanced approach to questions about how ritual magic has survived the advent of modernity and demonstrates the ways in which modern culture has recreated magical discourse.
  46. Dictionary of Gnosis & Western Esotericism” by Wouter J. Hanegraaff - This is the first comprehensive reference work to cover the entire domain of “Gnosis and Western Esotericism” from the period of Late Antiquity to the present. Containing around 400 articles by over 180 international specialists, it provides critical overviews discussing the nature and historical development of all its important currents and manifestations, from Gnosticism and Hermetism to Astrology, Alchemy and Magic, from the Hermetic Tradition of the Renaissance to Rosicrucianism and Christian Theosophy, and from Freemasonry and Illuminism to 19th-century Occultism and the contemporary New Age movement.
  47. The Alchemy of Light: Geometry and Optics in Late Renaissance Alchemical Illustration” by Ursula Szulakowska - This study concerns the late Renaissance metaphysics of light in its adoption to a Paracelsian alchemical context by John Dee, Heinrich Khunrath, Michael Maier and Robert Fludd. he volume includes 50 illustrations from alchemical treatises of the period, the emphasis being placed on Khunrath's "Amphiteatrum Sapientiea Aeternae" (1595-1609). The study investigates these images using analytical tools drawn from semiotics, structuralism and post-structuralism.
  48. Theurgy and the Soul: The Neoplatonism of Iamblichus” by Gregory Shaw - A study of Iamblichus of Syria (ca. 240-325), whose teachings set the final form of pagan spirituality prior to the Christianization of the Roman Empire. Shaw focuses on the theory and practice of theurgy, the most controversial and significant aspect of Iamblichus's Platonism.
  49. Platonic Theology, Volume 1: Books I-IV” by Marsilio Ficino, edited by James Hankins - A visionary work and philosophical masterpiece of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), the Florentine scholar-philosopher-magus who was largely responsible for the Renaissance revival of Plato. A student of the Neoplatonic schools of Plotinus and Proclus, Ficino was committed to reconciling Platonism with Christianity, in the hope that such a reconciliation would initiate a spiritual revival and return of the golden age. This is one of the keys to understanding the art, thought, culture, and spirituality of the Renaissance.
  50. Giordano Bruno and Renaissance Science” by Hilary Gatti - This argument, associated with the work of Frances Yates, holds that early modern science was impregnated with and shaped by Hermetic and occult traditions, and has led scholars to view Bruno primarily as a magus.
  51. De Umbris Idearum” (The Collected Works of Giordano Bruno, Book 1)” by Giordano Bruno, edited by Scott Gosnell - To memorize anything, distribute vivid, emotionally stirring imagined images around a piece of familiar architecture. This is the method of loci, or memory palace method, first developed in classical antiquity.
  52. "Hermes: Guide of Souls" by Karl Kerenyi, translated by Murray Stein - Presents an authoritative study of the great god Hermes whom the Greeks revered as the Guides of Souls as well as the complex role of Hermes in classical mythology.
  53. Ritual Texts for the Afterlife: Orpheus and the Bacchic Gold Tablets” by Fritz Graf and Sarah Illes Johnston - Fascinating texts written on small gold tablets that were deposited in graves provide a unique source of information about what some Greeks and Romans believed regarding the fate that awaited them after death, and how they could influence it. These texts, dating from the late fifth century BCE to the second century CE, have been part of the scholarly debate on ancient afterlife beliefs since the end of the nineteenth century. The tablets belonged to those who had been initiated into the mysteries of Dionysus Bacchius and relied heavily upon myths narrated in poems ascribed to the mythical singer Orpheus.
  54. Magic and Magicians in the Greco-Roman World” by Matthew W. Dickie - This study is the first to assemble the evidence for the existence of sorcerors in the ancient world; it also addresses the question of their identity and social origins. The resulting investigation takes us to the underside of Greek and Roman society, into a world of wandering holy men and women, conjurors and wonder-workers, and into the lives of prostitutes, procuresses, charioteers and theatrical performers.

2020.09.18 19:44 Brother_Moloch_969 List of Academic Books, Websites, Blogs & More Resources for Pre-1800's Magic & Sorcery

Crossposted from Magick.
  53.
